Former Australia National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Brad Haddin has issued a stern warning to the India National Cricket Team Test captain Shubman Gill.
Brad Haddin said that Shubman Gill should make an 'attitude adjustment' after Team India's defeat to Team England in the first Test of the five-match series at Headingley in Leeds.
Brad Haddin was disappointed with the awful fielding performance displayed by India in the Leeds Test and felt it reflected captain Shubman Gill's attitude.
Haddin said that Shubman Gill needs to ensure that he makes India a great fielding team in his tenure, starting off by working on his attitude.
“Every great team, no matter what year you’re playing, the one stand out feature they’ve always had is that they’ve been a great fielding team. And I think that is one legacy Gill has start to leave now on this team. He needs an attitude adjustment. If you want to field well and compete the whole time, it’s only attitude.
"You can do all your technical work off the field and have as many coaches as anyone, but it won't matter. Even in the IPL this year, the catching was horrible. And that could be a byproduct,” he said on the LiSTNR Sport podcast.
India dropped 8 catches in the 1st Test against England
The Shubman Gill & Co. faced a 5-wicket defeat to the Ben Stokes-led side in the Test series opener, and the loss was mainly attributed to the poor fielding performance of the side.
During the Test match, India dropped as many as eight catching opportunities, which shifted the momentum towards the England National Cricket Team.
Those eight dropped chances cost India a whopping 250 runs and extended the struggles of the Jasprit Bumrah-led Indian bowling unit.
The worst performer on the field for India was the opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was responsible for four dropped catches — three in the cordon (third slip, fourth slip, and gully) and one in the deep.
Yashasvi Jaiswal equalled the record for most dropped catches by an Indian fielder in a Test match and faced brutal bashing from the fans as well as experts.
But if you’re going to be a great player, he’s got to work on his fielding - Brad Haddin on Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Brad Haddin further highlighted the importance of fielding, saying that the Rajasthan Royals' 14-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, set the stage on fire in the Indian Premier League 2025 with his exceptional batting performance, but he won't achieve greatness until he establishes himself as a good fielder.
“Take the young kid [Vaibhav Suryavanshi] from Rajasthan for example. Everyone is talking about how well he batted, and it was unbelievable. But if you’re going to be a great player, he’s got to work on his fielding, his presence in the game. The one thing I would say to India is find a way to be the best fielding team in the world because you got the talent everywhere else,” he said.
India National Cricket Team went from 430/3 to 471 all out in the first innings of the Leeds Test against England, and in the second innings, India went from 333/4 to 364. While talking about India's shocking collapses, Brad Haddin said:
"What hasn't happened for the first time is India's batting collapse. There’s a lot of pressure on that top order. If you get through them, they will run through the remaining."
