Deontay Wilder dropped Tyrrell Herndon twice en route to a routine stoppage victory in his return from a year-long hiatus.
Wilder made his return to the ring for the first time since being brutally knocked out by Zhilei Zhang in June last year.
It was considered a last throw of the dice for the ‘Bronze Bomber’ at 39-years-old with defeat likely to spell an end to his stellar professional career.
He took on huge underdog Tyrrell Herndon at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, as he looked to score a statement KO and reignite his power-punching reputation.
Wilder landed a precise and crisp left hook in the second round which saw Herndon touch the canvas, an early sign his power would dictate the outcome of yet another contest.
Herndon was floored by another barrage in the sixth, which saw him counted while collapsed on the ropes and he was inevitably on borrowed time.
And the veteran got the job done in the seventh period, with a big right hand snapping back the head of Herndon.

With little firing back, the official stepped in and halted the bout handing Wilder his much-needed victory inside the distance.
It was far from vintage and wasn’t another to add to the highlight reel, but ultimately he got the job done after much persistence.
He said of his performance: “It felt great. Thanks to my opponent, I appreciate the work.
“I’ve been laid off for a long time, getting myself back together, repairing myself emotionally.
“It is just nice to be back in the ring. This is a new beginning for me.”

Herndon came out to a chorus of boos but was happy to play the pantomime villain, boxing and moving to frustrate Wilder in a sluggish and uneventful opening round.
The favourite was showing signs of letting his trademark right hand go in the second round but Herndon was able to avoid it for now.
But he found his mark with Wilder landing a neat check left hook which glanced the head of Herndon and sent him to the canvas.
The underdog suggested it was a slip and looked in disbelief, but the referee began counting and awarded the knockdown.
Herndon recovered and didn’t feel the effects of the shot too bad as he came out for the third, but it was a crushing warning sign.
Wilder is now looking to fight his way back into world title contention by 2026Mark Robinson/MatchroomBlood poured from the nose of the challenging fighter in the fifth as he emerged from his corner, as the power started to take its toll.
And he was counted again in the sixth round as he collapsed into the ropes after taking more punishment from Wilder, who was so far in the ascendancy.
It seemed a matter of time again, with Herndon struggling again on his feet as balance issues saw him slip before the end of the period.
‘Too Real’ was simply out of his depth in the seventh, limited to the occasional single shot as Wilder piled on all the pressure.
And the fight was finally called off in the seventh with Herndon’s resistance grinded down, as a big right hook snapped back the head.
The referee had seen enough and stepped in to wave off the contest and spare the American more punishment.
Wilder is now looking to take more tune-up fights before taking on a big name such as Anthony Joshua in 2026.
