The Phoenix Suns didn’t operate on cruise control during NBA Draft week despite having a first-time general manager hitting the switches.
On top of orchestrating a trade with Houston centered around Kevin Durant, Brian Gregory and Phoenix’s front office kept their feet on the gas behind a handful of draft trades that netted rookies Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea, plus veteran Mark Williams.
In the spirit of getting younger, larger and more athletic, Phoenix stuck to its newfound vision.

“All you have to do is watch where the game has got to at this particular point,” Gregory told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Friday. “You look at it and you say length, athletic ability, the energy, the effort level, the pressure on defense, the pressure that you have to put on the rim offensively, the protection you have to have on the rim defensively, the ability to have a little deeper bench and be able to rotate guys in there to play at the pace with the cutting and the movement that you want.
“We just took a long, hard look at ourselves and as a front office came up with, ‘OK, These are some of the things that we need to get done.’ Fortunately, because of all the situations, we had an opportunity to do it. And I think this was a great first step. I think you have to constantly be evolving … and build a team around what’s happening now and what’s going to happen in the next three to four years.”
What’s the next step for Brian Gregory and the Suns this offseason?
With the draft over, the attention turns to the trade market and free agency.
Of the biggest to-dos regarding Phoenix’s roster? Finding a new home for guard Bradley Beal and his no-trade clause.
But while Beal marks the next big domino to fall in what’s been a failed Phoenix tenure, Gregory isn’t going to leverage future potential for a short-term fix.
“You can’t force stuff. You may want it and you may think it’s the best move, but if it doesn’t give you exactly what you’re looking for, if it puts you in a difficult position down the road, then you got to have some patience, too,” Gregory said.
“We’re going to show that we’re going to be very organized in everything that we do. We’re going to be very intentional in everything that we do because we want to get this thing right.”
