The Giants announced on Friday morning that they have optioned right-hander Sean Hjelle to Triple-A Sacramento and recalled right-hander Carson Seymour in a corresponding move.
Last week, Hjelle’s wife, Caroline, made allegations of abandonment and abuse towards Hjelle in a video on TikTok that has since been deleted.
“I don’t have an official comment right now,” Hjelle told reporters last week. “I like to actually talk with my agent, my lawyer. This has been something that’s been going on for over a year now in terms of our relationship and our divorce and our separation and everything. But I don’t have any official comment right now. I just want to talk to the appropriate people and figure out what the steps are, just kind of taking it in stride right now.
“No official comment right now; I feel confident saying I will have one eventually. I don’t have an exact timeline on that. I would like to actually get with the people that are handling the situation with me and for me before I actually make an official statement.”
Hjelle appeared in three games following the allegations. On Sunday, Hjelle allowed four earned runs in one inning of relief as the Giants were swept by the Miami Marlins.
Prior to the allegations, Hjelle made a last-minute start for the Giants when Kyle Harrison was sent to the Boston Red Sox less than an hour before first pitch as part of the Rafael Devers trade.
“We are aware of these serious allegations,” the Giants said in a statement last week. “We have been in contact with MLB. These type of allegations fall under their jurisdiction and we won’t be commenting further.”
Seymour, 26, was acquired from the Mets in 2022 as part of the trade that sent Darin Ruf to the New York Mets. He’s the first of the Giants’ trio of Carsons to arrive in the majors, the other two being top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt and right-hander Carson Ragsdale.
This season, Seymour has posted a 3.89 ERA over 15 starts with 83 strikeouts over 74 innings with Sacramento in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. Seymour will likely take Hjelle’s place as a low-leverage reliever who can provide multiple innings, but the Giants view Seymour as a take.
With San Francisco’s starter depth taking a hit as a result of the Devers trade, it’s possible that Seymour makes a spot start or two sometime this season.
