The Gambo 5: Predicting Suns’ No. 10 pick in NBA Draft

I am going to roll the dice here and do The Gambo 5 — when I probably shouldn’t — for the Phoenix Suns ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft.

Truth be told The Gambo 5 usually takes between three to four weeks to complete. But because we just found out the Suns have the 10th pick like 48 hours ago, this was all done in the last few hours. So, the margin for error is a lot greater than previous Gambo 5s for the Arizona Cardinals and Suns.

But as Bruce Arians says, “no risk it, no biscuit!”

I will not add a wild card but I will say I did this based on the belief after talking to several teams that Khaman Maluach will not be there at No. 10 overall. If he is — game changer! I do not have any guards in this list. I have one legitimate center, three guys who can play both power forward and center and one who is a small forward. No guards.

So, without further ado, The Gambo 5 — please don’t bet your milk money on this. It was rushed.

    – Asa Newell, Georgia F

    – Noa Essengue, Ratiopharm Ulm F

    – Carter Bryant, Arizona SF

    – Derik Queen, Maryland C

    – Collin Murray-Boyles, South Carolina F

    Asa Newell, Georgia F

Newell is a 6-foot-9 big man who led Georgia in scoring and rebounding as a true freshman this past season. In 29.2 minutes per game, Newell put up 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 54% from the floor and 29% from beyond the arc. He was an offensive rebound machine, grabbing 3.3 per game, which ranked 22nd in Division 1.

Newell is considered a terrific athlete who can fly around on defense and provide versatility. He can finish strong at the rim with a lot of dunks in college, and if his shot develops, he could become an ideal pick-and-pop partner for Phoenix’s guards.

The 5 best prospects for the Suns to target at No. 10 in NBA Draft

Who do NBA mock drafts have the Suns picking after the Kevin Durant trade?

He is a bit undersized at the 5, so his role in the NBA is not obvious. The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie wrote Newell is more of a 4 on defense and a 5 on offense in terms of skills.

Newell made the Freshman All-SEC team in 2024-25. He played high school ball at Montverde Academy alongside projected top 10 picks Cooper Flagg and Derik Queen.

    Noa Essengue, Ratiopharm Ulm F

Essengue is coming off his second season playing for the EuroCup’s Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany. In 18 games played, the 6-foot-10 forward out of France averaged 12.4 points per game on 56% shooting and 29.4% from long range. He added 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.4 steals across 23.7 minutes per game.

He paced the team in steals and finished third in points.

ESPN’s Jeremy Woo pinpointed Essengue’s mix of size, versatility, age and production has drawn plenty of interest among NBA teams in the nine to 15 range.

Woo and Jonathan Givony have the Frenchman landing with Toronto at No. 9 overall, just one spot ahead of the Suns at No. 10.

He has a knack for drawing fouls but must improve his shooting efficiency at the next level.

    Derik Queen, Maryland C

Queen joined Maryland as a McDonald’s All-American and consensus five-star recruit playing at Montverde. The 6-foot-9 big man led Maryland to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, hitting a game-winning fadeaway at the buzzer in the second round against Colorado State.

Queen started every game for Maryland, leading the team with 16.3 points per game while shooting 52.6% from the floor. Queen only shot 20% from deep but hit 76.6% of his free throws. He finished 34th in the nation with 9.0 rebounds per game.

The Baltimore native earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award and made First Team All-Big Ten for a highly productive lone collegiate season.

Queen has been polarizing for analysts in the pre-draft process with a wide range of projections. He is a highly skilled, playmaking big man who plays questionable defense and is a bit undersized for an NBA center.

    Carter Bryant, Arizona SF

The Arizona product is coming off his lone season with the Wildcats. In 37 games played, Bryant averaged 6.5 points on 46% shooting and 37.1% from deep. He added 4.1 rebounds and an assist across 19.3 minutes per game.

Bryant is being viewed as one of the cleanest 3-and-D prospects and one of the best fits for Phoenix at No. 10. He has climbed big boards this draft cycle after primarily coming off Arizona’s bench as a freshman.

Hours ahead of the draft, Bryant was linked to the Suns’ No. 10 pick in numerous NBA mock drafts.

    Collin Murray-Boyles, South Carolina F

Murray-Boyles appeared in 32 games for South Carolina as a sophomore. Across that span, the forward averaged 16.9 points on 58.6% shooting, which paced the SEC, and 26.5% from long range.

He chipped in 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.3 blocks in 30.6 minutes per game.

For his efforts, he was named to the All-SEC Second Team.

Aside from his scoring ability inside, the 6-foot-7 forward’s defensive prowess stands out as the forward can match up with multiple positions.
