Newly released renderings of a proposed modernization project taking place over the next several years will include a new entrance and outdoor terrace, increased efficiency with entering the building, a new outdoor venue and plaza bar, an expansion of the team store, upgraded seating and technology, and several improvements to the event-watching experience.

According to Dan Williamson of Werth PR, the renovations are expected to cost around $400 million. Those funds would include both private and public funding, and it is estimated to take approximately three to four years.

Of the renderings sent to NBC4, Williamson noted a brand-new main entrance that expands into the neighboring office building. An outdoor terrace would be added to connect a new upper concourse food hall to the Founders Club.

The new entrance will also get guests out of the weather and inside, and through security at a faster pace. The terrace will bring a new outdoor venue downtown, a new plaza bar, plus a giant LED screen to create an area for watch parties and community events.

Williamson said Nationwide Arena is also relocating and expanding the team store to make it quicker and easier for fans to grab team gear.

Elevators and escalators will be added throughout the arena, improving ADA access, and a pedestrian bridge to the McConnell Garage will be constructed to make it easier to get into and around the building.

Inside the Arena, fans will see renovated restrooms, faster and more modern concessions, and expanded terraces that offer spots to gather without missing a minute of the action, according to Williamson, who said among the features will be a new long bar with direct views of the ice.

Nationwide Arena will reportedly upgrade its seating, enhance technology, and offer new spaces for media and touring acts. There are also plans for the eventual replacement of the north parking garage.

Williamson said it is unknown when improvements and construction will begin.

The Downtown arena opened in September 2000 and has been the home of the Columbus Blue Jackets since. For Jackets game, the arena seats around 18,500 and has hosted a handful of Stanley Cup Playoffs games.

Outside of hockey, Nationwide Arena has been home to its share of basketball games, including men's March Madness first- and second-round tournament games for the last 20 years.

No basketball games at Nationwide Arena were bigger than the 2018 women's NCAA Final Four, which ended with Notre Dame winning the title on an iconic buzzer-beater from Arike Ogunbowale against Mississippi State.

Nationwide Arena is scheduled to host the women's Final Four in 2027. Other events to take place at the arena include the American figure skating championships, NCAA women's volleyball championships, as well as WWE and UFC events.
