The Red Sea Marine Park Authority (RSMPA) closed diving activities in The Two Brothers Islands area on Tuesday for 42 hours due to shark monitoring.
The site is a popular diving and safari destination in the southern Red Sea, and is known for its shark population.
This serves to implement a program to track and monitor shark behavior using satellite-connected devices, as part of the RSMPA’s efforts to maintain ecological balance and ensure the sustainability of marine tourism activities.
Diving centers were notified of the decision.
The Red Sea Chamber of Diving and Marine Activities received a circular from RSMPA, including a notice of a temporary suspension of all diving activities in the area during the two days of implementation.
This is to allow the field team to implement the program without any human intervention that might impact the process or risk the safety of participants.
The program is being implemented by a specialized scientific team from the RSMPA, in cooperation with an environmental conservation organization, and with the participation of a French expert who is a leading specialist in installing satellite tracking devices on marine organisms.
Tracking Sharks
The use of these devices serves as one of the most advanced methods for studying and analyzing shark movements and behavior.
The program aims to monitor and track the sharks most frequently encountered in recorded incidents by attaching precise devices to shark backs and then releasing them back into their natural environment.
This enables the collection of accurate vital data on their movements, migration routes, seasonal behavior, and interactions with human activities.
The Red Sea is home to approximately 29 species of sharks, which are of great environmental and economic importance, contributing to biological balance and constituting a strong attraction for ecotourism and diving.
The Two Brothers
A geologist and environmental expert, Abul-Hajjaj Nasr-Eddin, said that The Two Brothers Islands are two small, isolated islands surrounded by stunning coral reefs on all sides.
They are distinguished by their unique rock formations and panoramic views of the open sea.
Despite their small size, the depths surrounding them represent an entire world of rare marine life, he noted, with depths rapidly ranging between 800 and 1,000 meters, providing an ideal environment for sharks and large deep-sea fish to gather.
Nasr-Eddin explained that the waters of The Two Brothers Islands are the most important shark habitat in the Red Sea, specifically hosting hammerhead sharks, blacktip sharks, and Atlantic manta rays.
These giant marine creatures attract the adventurous from all across the world to dive alongside them. Visiting the site is an exceptional experience geared at professionals divers only.
