‘It’s overrated’ – Emma Raducanu handed coach advice ahead of Wimbledon by Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios empathised with Emma Raducanu as her coaching situation continues to be under the spotlight.

Raducanu has had several different coaches in the last four years as she continues to try and get the best out of her talent.

Kyrgios gave talkSPORT his take on Emma Raducanu’s coaching situation

Since winning the US Open in 2021, the Brit has chopped and changed coaches in order to try and find a winning formula.

The 22-year-old, however, is yet to win another career title.

She is working with Mark Petchey and former coach Nick Cavaday, who had to step back earlier this year for health reasons.

“I think having Mark and Nick, both people who have banks of experience and I think they can complement each other really well and I trust both of them a lot,” Raducanu said ahead of Wimbledon.

Kyrgios’ own coaching set-up has raised a few eyebrows and is somewhat unique.

That’s because he has not had a coach for a number of years.

“For some personalities, I think it’s overrated,” he told talkSPORT. “For personalities like myself I wouldn’t want to put my coach through the ups and downs.”

Kyrgios did not endorse this method for Raducanu, but emphasised she needs to remember to find the fun in tennis.

He continued: “For someone like Emma, I think just finding someone that cares about her best interests, not only about the tennis, but getting to know these people off the court, what they love, what makes them tick. I think that’s maybe what she’s been missing in the past.

“She needs someone that actually cares about her well-being. But you know winning a Grand Slam at 18, it’s not easy. It came with a lot of things on the court and off the court a lot of responsibility, being in the spotlight.

Raducanu has shown some good form ahead of WimbledonGetty

“She’s had some good results over the last couple weeks, I’ve been following. It looks like she’s enjoying herself playing doubles with Katie Boulter.

“Just remembering that tennis is fun. You know, that’s why they were playing. Every time I see negativity in the media and all this I do feel sorry because it’s like she just wants to go out on court and play and enjoy it and get some good results.

“Hopefully she does find what works for her, but it’s not easy.”

Raducanu has never been past the fourth round at Wimbledon and will be looking to put that right in 2025.

However, she narrowly missed out on being seeded at the All England Club as she is ranked 36th in the world.

Only the top 32 are named as seeds – meaning Raducanu must face the luck of the draw.

Andrew Richardson – Guided Raducanu to US Open in September 2021 before going separate ways

Mark Petchey – Childhood coach that has returned to help over grass court season in 2025

Raducanu has faced worrying news ahead of the tournament, however, after being informed that her stalker had tried to buy tickets for Wimbledon.

The man followed her to four tournaments earlier this year and was given a restraining order by Dubai police, with his name circulated to tennis authorities.

“Wimbledon and everyone did an amazing job. I got a notification, the police contacted me and told me everything was OK,” Raducanu said.

“I know that I am not the first athlete to go through this, and I probably won’t be the last – not just as an athlete, but females in general.”

Wimbledon begins on Monday, June 30 and runs until Sunday, July 13.
