Following Andrew Cuomo's concession, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist, won the New York City mayoral primary. This victory signals a major shift in the city's political landscape, as Mamdani champions progressive policies like universal child care and rent freezes to address the city's affordability crisis.Cuomo, the state's former governor, was attempting to pull off a political comeback after resigning from office in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal.
In a speech to supporters, Cuomo said Mamdani - a 33-year-old democratic socialist - had "won" the primary race and that "we are going to take a look and make some decisions".
"Tonight is his night," Cuomo, 67, said. If elected, Mamdani would be the first Muslim and Indian American to lead the nation's largest city.
Mamdani and Lander have cross-endorsed each other, urging their supporters to rank the other candidate second on their ballots. The cross endorsement is one of the several major developments this polling captures for the first time.
Conducted June 18-20, the polling surveys New Yorkers following major late breaking campaign developments, including: several cross-endorsements, the final Democratic primary debate, Lander’s brief detention by ICE just outside of federal immigration court, a controversy surrounding Mamdani’s defense of the words “globalize the intifada,” Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsing Mamdani, Cuomo gaining increasing support in the Jewish community and several influential opinion pieces on the pages of The New York Times.
Early voting started in New York on 14 June, and the city said more than 380,000 people had voted by Sunday, more than double the number that voted early in the 2021 primary. A heatwave on Tuesday – temperatures in New York reached 100F (38C) – appeared not to have suppressed turnout with more than 1 million people estimated to have voted, CBS New York reported.
The concession from Cuomo, who previously served as governor until resigning amid allegations of sexual misconduct, indicates not only a personal failure for him but also reflects changing voter sentiments within the city . Mamdani's potential election would represent a historic milestone; if successful in the general election, he would become the first South Asian and Muslim mayor of New York City . This outcome underscores an evolving electorate increasingly supportive of diverse leadership and progressive reform.
