England U21 vs Netherlands U21 predictions, odds and betting tips

England and the Netherlands are each one win away from reaching the final of the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, but only one of them can make it through to the tournament’s showpiece match.

Will England get the job done following their impressive defeat of Spain, or will there be a sting in the tail for Lee Carsley’s boys?

England U21 vs Netherlands U21 predictions

England’s Under-21s arrived at this year’s European Championship as the defending champions following their success in 2023.

Ahead of the semi-finals, which take place this midweek, they are the favourites to lift the trophy again this summer.

England kick-started their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Czech Republic, before they were held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia. Lee Carsley’s side then concluded the group stage with a 2-1 defeat by Germany, a result which sent them through in second spot.

That set up a tricky tie against Spain in the quarter-finals. La Rojita were unbeaten having topped their group, and they fancied their chances against the defending champions.

Instead, it was England who were triumphant. They stormed into a 2-0 lead early on, as James McAtee and Harvey Elliott struck in the first quarter of an hour.

Spain halved the deficit before half-time, with Javi Guerra making no mistake from the penalty spot, but England held on and then made it 3-1 in second-half stoppage time when Elliot Anderson converted a spot-kick of his own.

It was an impressive victory. England were on the back foot very early on, yet those two strikes turned the match on its head. They then did well to hold Spain at arm’s length, ensuring their opponents did not level the score.

“I’m not sure I’m flying the flag [for British coaches], but it’s important when people watch the under-21s at home they’re excited by the way they’re playing,” Carsley said after his team’s victory in the quarter-finals.

“We want to see real attacking football, aggressive football, because you know what we’ve done in the past has got us to this position. If we’re going to win major tournaments, these are the moments where we have to step up.”

Next up for England is the Netherlands. They also collected four points from nine in the group stage, drawing with Finland, losing to Denmark and beating Ukraine.

They then edged out Portugal in the last eight, with Ernest Poku of AZ scoring the only goal of the game late on.

The Dutch also reached the semis in 2021, but two years ago they did not make it out of the group. Like England, they are now just two wins away from being crowned junior kings of the continent.

England and the Netherlands will battle it out in the first of the tournament’s semi-finals.

    England U21 to win

England had their ups and downs in the group stage, but Carsley will hope that his team’s deserved triumph over Spain has kicked them into gear.

The Netherlands will not be easy to beat, though. They showed plenty of grit and resilience last time out, defeating Portugal despite playing most of the match with 10 men after Ruben van Bommel was sent off in the 21st minute.

The Dutch have not won a semi-final at this tournament since 2007, when they overcame England on penalties.

This time, though, we think the Young Lions will come out on top. This is likely to be a close game, but Carsley knows what it takes to win knockout games and his side look to have found their rhythm.

    Under 2.5 goals

Unlike the group stage, there are no longer any second chances. A defeat in this part of the competition is always fatal.

That could breed caution. England grabbed the bull by the horns against Spain, but unless they score early on again here, we could see a cagey encounter.

The Netherlands’ last two games – which were by far their most consequential – each featured under 2.5 goals.

The Jong Oranje will aim to keep things tight at the back first and foremost, so England must be patient as they seek a breakthrough.

Harvey Elliott to score any time

Harvey Elliott has been one of England’s best performers in Slovakia up to now.

The Liverpool man faces an uncertain future at club level, but he has put that to one side as he strives to win silverware with his country.

Elliott has played more games at a higher level than many of his international team-mates, and that experience has stood him in good stead so far.

The attacking midfielder is in fine form and he will be a thorn in the side of the Netherlands in the semis.
