Syria Civil Defence teams arrive in Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad

Enab Baladi – Ras al-Ain

The teams of the Syria Civil Defence arrived in the cities of Ras al-Ain and Tal Abyad as part of a response plan aimed at protecting agricultural crops with the onset of the harvest season in the region.

The local councils in both cities welcomed the Civil Defence teams and equipment, distributing them to agricultural areas in the countryside, aiming for rapid intervention in case of fire outbreaks or emergencies during the harvest season, which sees increased activity during this time of year.

This is the first time that the Syria Civil Defence teams have spread in the two cities since the control of the Syrian National Army (SNA) over them in 2019, a step that has been widely welcomed by farmers and residents of the area.

    Coinciding with the harvest season

On June 13, the teams entered to support efforts in protecting crops and facing the expected fire risks during this time of year.

Abdul Jabbar Jumaa, the response campaign leader in the two cities, told Enab Baladi that the intervention was coordinated between the emergency management and the regional coordinators, and that the goal of their field presence is to protect agricultural crops, which are a primary source of income for residents, especially with the increased risk of fire outbreaks during this period due to the dryness of the plants and the increase in agricultural activity.

He added that the participating team consists of 34 trained volunteers in dealing with crop fires, supported by more than ten fully equipped vehicles to ensure swift response.

He mentioned that the work is carried out according to a comprehensive plan that is studied and implemented in phases based on priorities and resources, aiming to cover all Syrian territories, including Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain, through fixed centers for emergency services including search-and-rescue and firefighting, with a current focus only on the harvest season.

    Facilitation from local councils

The councils of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain provided facilitation for the Civil Defence teams, including housing for volunteers, securing sites for vehicles and equipment, and easing movement and access to agricultural lands to speed up response in the event of fire or emergencies during the harvest season.

The head of the local council in Ras al-Ain, Muhammad Hamza, told Enab Baladi that the local council in Ras al-Ain provided all the necessary facilities for the work of the Civil Defence teams.

He explained that the capabilities of the local council are limited regarding the Civil Defence teams, as it owns three vehicles designated for firefighting, and does not have the capacity to cover the entire area, especially with the vast agricultural spaces.

He added that the presence of the Civil Defence teams, especially during this period, will make matters easier, particularly in case of fire outbreaks like last year.

Hamza noted that the local council hopes that future cooperation will include the establishment of fixed centers for the Syria Civil Defence in Ras al-Ain to enhance preparedness and provide emergency services in a permanent and stable manner.

On his part, the Director of the Media Office of the local council in Tal Abyad, Mu’tab Hussein, told Enab Baladi that the council had provided all necessary facilities for the Civil Defence teams that arrived in the city.

He added that housing and logistical arrangements for the teams were secured immediately upon their arrival, to ensure they begin work without delay.

Hussein pointed out that the local council is prepared to provide everything necessary in terms of support and facilitation that fall within its responsibilities, aiming to protect agricultural crops in Tal Abyad.

The residents of the cities of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ain primarily rely on agriculture as a major source of income, making securing the harvest season and protecting agricultural crops from fires and emergencies an urgent necessity for maintaining their economic stability.

Fighting fires has been difficult in the two cities due to limited resources and the proximity of the lands to areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the presence of front lines witnessing ongoing clashes and military tensions.
