Watch: Jofra Archer in contention for 2nd Test against India after fiery county comeback

The England speedster Jofra Archer made a sensational comeback to first-class cricket on Monday, June 23, in a County Championship clash between Sussex and Durham at Chester-le-Street. It was the first red-ball game for Jofra Archer in over four years, and it could pave the way for his long-awaited Test comeback against India in the ongoing five-match Test series.

The 30-year-old pacer, who was once the backbone of England’s pace attack, has been sidelined from the action since his last Test in Ahmedabad back in 2021. Since then, Archer has faced several injuries, undergoing two elbow surgeries and a stress fracture in his back that nearly ended his career.

But on his return, Archer made an instant impact. Bowling with the same fiery rhythm and control, the Barbados-born fast bowler dismissed Durham’s Emilio Gay with a fast, full, and deadly delivery. Gay was trapped lbw, as Archer ended a long wait of 1,501 days without a red-ball wicket.

Archer looked sharp, focused, and ready to reclaim his place in England’s Test squad, especially with the high-voltage Test series against India underway at home. He is likely to be named in the England squad for the second Test, starting on July 2 at the Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

Recently, England captain Ben Stokes has revealed that Jofra Archer is desperate to return to Test cricket and has been in constant touch with the team. After spending time in white-ball cricket and finally stepping back into first-class action with Sussex, Archer’s Test comeback against India for the second Test is almost certain, but only if his fitness holds up in the coming weeks.

Ben Stoked had said last week, ““He’s been absolutely desperate to put the white shirt back on. He’s had a torrid run with injuries, but he’s managed a fair bit of white-ball cricket recently.”

Jofra Archer feels physically fit for Test comeback

After dealing with multiple elbow surgeries and a serious back injury, Archer now feels his body is holding up well. Now, the bigger challenge for Archer is staying mentally strong as he eases back into longer formats, but he is confident about returning to Tests soon.

Jofra Archer was quoted as saying by BBC Radio Sussex, “Now I know my body can hold up to it, the mental part of the game [is a greater issue]. Over the next couple of days, I'm going to have a battle with it. It's all good. I'll keep trucking along.”

He signed off by saying, “When the scoreboard got to 50 overs, I was like, 'It's time to come off now,' but we got to the end of the day, and it wasn't that bad. It was OK. The pitch didn't do much. When the ball is moving around, it feels a bit more exciting. I guess so (ready for test return). I just want to get through the game. I'm glad I've finished a day of four-day cricket.”
