Rishabh Pant tightly slapped by ICC after Umpire altercation

Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been heavily sanctioned after breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the ongoing first Test of the five-match series against England. Pant received one demerit point for showing dissent to on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney regarding a ball change.

Rishabh Pant scored 118 off 140 balls, including 15 fours and three sixes, as Team India posted 364 in their second innings at Leeds on Monday, June 23. He had also scored 134 in the first innings. The left-handed batter became the first Indian wicketkeeper to register centuries in both innings of a Test match.

On June 24, the ICC confirmed that Rishabh Pant had violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Pant received one demerit point on his disciplinary record. Notably, it is his first offense in the last 24 months.

"Pant was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match," a statement from the ICC said.

"In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Pant’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offense in 24 months," the statement added.

Rishabh Pant Accepts Sanctions from ICC Match Referee

Pant accepted the charges of dissent without contest. The ICC confirmed that Pant admitted to his offence and agreed to the penalty proposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

"There was no disciplinary hearing as Pant admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees," the statement added.

"The charges were brought in by the on-field umpires, Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel, along with the third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and the fourth umpire, Mike Burns."

"Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points."

Rishabh Pant Flung Old Ball in Frustration After Umpires Denied Replacement

During the 61st over of England’s first innings, Rishabh Pant was frustrated after the on-field umpires declined the request to change the ball. With Harry Brook and Ben Stokes well-set at the crease and the ball losing its effectiveness after 60 overs, Jasprit Bumrah had raised concerns about its condition.

However, the umpires found the ball to be within acceptable limits after conducting the gauge test. Pant approached the umpires again with the ball after Brook hit a boundary off Mohammed Siraj.

When the officials refused to authorize a change, Pant threw the ball to the ground in front of them. This reaction came amid growing frustration in the Indian camp, as the bowlers struggled to make an impact with the old ball.
