It is an irony not lost on anyone at Everton that the start of a rebuild that has no time to lose must wait another week or so.
While insiders speak of genuine excitement at the prospect of David Moyes sending out a younger, more attacking side next season, the sheer scale of the job facing the club this summer is undoubtedly a daunting one.
This is a club restructuring impressively off the field, poaching executives from Manchester United and Manchester City for key roles, but that will become a footnote if the team isn’t fit for purpose.

Sources speak of bringing in potentially 10 or more new signings in as many weeks, utilising every loan slot – both domestic and overseas – and spinning plates when it comes to free agents.
The phone, apparently, has been red hot with offers as word spreads through the game of Everton’s position.
But the message has also come back that this is a different era at Finch Farm.
Preserving Premier League survival with weeks to spare gave Moyes and the club’s new-look recruitment team a head start in their planning.

They aren’t ruling out opportunistic moves, most likely towards the end of the transfer window, but there has been data-driven, rigorous identification of the sort of players they need.
And at the head of it is Moyes, who wants to build a high-press, high energy team ready to put opponents on the back foot and improve his side’s risible scoring record over the last two months.
“In terms of a squad overhaul nobody in the Premier League has ever done what we’re about to do. It’s exciting but it’s risky as well,” one insider admits.
The first addition is set to be Kenny Tete, the Dutch right-back who will depart Fulham when his contract expires at the end of the month.
Everton are in advanced talks and expect to complete the signing -but paying a big fee for a player will have to wait.
That is because Everton will wait until 1 July, which is the new financial year under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), to begin spending.
A hangover from the days before the Friedkin Group (TFG) began to restructure the club’s hair-raising finances is that they do not want to waste PSR headroom and are keen to keep their powder dry to make further moves in January if they need to.
But with just 14 senior professionals on the books by then, they have a lot to do.

The problem for Everton is the answer is pretty much everything.
A right-back, back-up goalkeeper, wingers and at least two frontline strikers are being sought.
But in short they need to both upgrade and replace the 12 players who are about to leave or who have been packed off back to their loan clubs.
Moyes’ priority, stressed in recruitment meetings, is clear.
He wants to make Everton more of an attacking force after two seasons where they have been among the division’s lowest scorers.
That is why the club are in talks with Villarreal over France Under-21 forward Thierno Barry, who is understood to be keen to come to the Premier League.
But triggering the striker’s £40m release clause is not Everton’s favoured route. Instead, they want to negotiate a lower fee.
The Toffees have also registered an interest in Manchester City’s James McAtee and, as first reported by The i Paper back in April, are monitoring Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.
They have also explored the possibility of signing Liverpool winger Ben Doak – although there is a fear that would be a difficult deal to complete – and hold a long-standing interest in Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff, who is available.
How will they do it?
TFG is ready to arm Everton with their most substantial transfer budget for five years but with so many departments requiring attention, there is a debate internally about whether the club should invest heavily on one player or split the funds to reinforce across the squad.
Nick Hammond, whose appointment was confirmed on Friday to lead player trading, is seen as a key hire by Everton.
While Moyes has the final say on players, Hammond will be expected to extract value.
The fact they were willing to match Liam Delap’s wage demands and fund his £30m release clause indicates that resources are much improved but insiders say they will be looking at the loan market.
Tete is unlikely to be the only free agent they speak to this summer.

Will they lose more players?
It is a distinct possibility.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has yet to make a firm decision on his future and the official line is that the lines of communication with his representatives remain open.
The striker was on holiday when the club put out an update stating that they continue to liaise with his representatives, however, and the smart money remains on him moving overseas as a free agent.
Domestically he has options if he wants to leave Everton but are they at the level he sees himself?
The i Paper has been told Leeds United and West Ham have both made preliminary contact – and nothing has progressed past that opening phone call – but he would surely be smarter re-signing with the Toffees.
There is more optimism surrounding midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye, with negotiations over a one-year deal with the potential option for a second ongoing.
The delay, it is understood, is around the sort of obligations that would trigger another year for a player who is no spring chicken at the age of 35.
But there is a resolve to retain Jarrad Branthwaite, even if Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur hover on the horizon.
Everton’s asking price remains close to the £80m they demanded when Manchester United made two failed bids last summer and they have opened talks over extending his contract beyond 2027.
