Americans to see new round of $500 payments automatically hit accounts in days thanks to ‘first-ever’ program

SOME Americans will see checks in their bank accounts in just days as part of a one-of-a-kind program.

The initiative offers $500 monthly direct payments that continue for a 12-month period.

Thanks to a partnership between three nonprofits, at least 32 mothers based in Columbus, Ohio, get the $211,200-worth of funds set aside for the Ohio Mothers Trust guaranteed income program.

Motherful, RISE Together Innovation Institute, and UpTogether, collaborated to combat childhood poverty while helping single mothers find financial security.

Danielle Syndor, CEO of RISE Together, explained in a news release that the Ohio Mothers Trust shows “that providing unconditional cash support to mothers can significantly boost the financial stability and overall well-being of families.”

“Childhood poverty was estimated to cost Franklin County $5.2 billion in lost economic activity in 2021.”

“Providing families with the resources they need is an investment in their future and the future health of our community,” Syndor added.

The qualifying 32 mothers were selected ahead of the first checks sent out in December.

They would’ve already gotten seven payments worth $3,500 combined thus far.

The next distribution coming in just days in July would make it an even $4,000 sent out.

There’s $2,500 that remains until December 2026 for a total of $6,000 in benefits per recipient.

Eligibility criteria for the Ohio Mothers Trust included being a single mother, living in or around Columbus, and having an annual income level at or below 80% of the median for the area.

Data showed that, at the time, median household annual income for Columbus was around $71,730, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis.

The 32 mothers are also being surveyed regularly for research and insights, potentially so the program can be extended.

    MOTHERS SPEAK OUT

Several mothers have already issued praise for the assistance.

“Being a recipient of the Ohio Mothers Trust guaranteed income is such a blessing,” an anonymous participant said in a statement.

    How does Guaranteed Income work?

Guaranteed Income and Universal Basic Income programs have taken off in popularity recently.

After the Biden administration’s American Rescue Plan of 2021 sent stimulus money to local governments, dozens began testing guaranteed income (GI) systems.

The specifics vary, but GI typically involves payouts to people with low incomes. Unlike traditional welfare, there are no job requirements, drug tests, or other strings attached.

Some have pushed for a Universal Basic Income (UBI), which would go to everyone regardless of how much money they make at work. Alaska has used a similar system since the 1970s.

Proponents say this alleviates poverty while incentivizing work, unlike classic welfare, which cuts benefits from people who begin earning “too much” money to qualify.

Opponents argue such a system is too expensive to function on a large scale and suggest Americans should avoid becoming reliant on government money.

With some cities heralding the success of GI programs, some Republican-led states have moved to ban them. States like Texas and Iowa, for example, have undermined major spending plans by pushing against GI.

“It makes me so happy to think that my bills will be paid on time and I can afford to get my son into more activities.”

Another added that the extra $500 a month “alleviates the stress of managing bills but also provides a pathway for me to tackle my debts and build a more stable future.”

“Thank you for seeing us single moms, for hearing us, and for creating a community that reminds us that we are worthy and not alone,” the recipient continued.

It still remains unknown whether or not the program will be re-instated for another year’s worth of payments to more mothers.

    HELPING HAND

Americans should also remain aware of other recent guaranteed income programs across the country.

Some offer similar monthly payout amounts.

For example, a life-saving initiative just finished in December with over $19 million being distributed to select residents in Illinois.

UpTogether also backed another program with $500 “unrestricted” monthly checks to 103 families in Michigan and Illinois.

There’s even a little-known “artist” program in Minnesota that seeks to help a specific group of candidates for five years.
