Troy Renck: There is crying in baseball. Owner Charlie Monfort admitted watching the Rockies brings him to tears. The honesty in Monfort’s interview with The Post’s Patrick Saunders about his sobriety and the Rockies was refreshing. For the past 15 years, the Rockies have operated in a silo, believing in their own flawed process and misguided loyalty. It has left them defined by incompetence. Monfort said what we have all been thinking for years, especially this season, that the team “needs a new set of eyeballs.” Anyone watching knows this franchise requires an overhaul. But will someone from inside the house airing a candid opinion finally inspire change?

But did you see happen to see Bob Nightengale’s story over the weekend for USA Today? The Rockies apparently need a new director of pitching with Steve Foster reportedly heading to Texas Tech. Nightengale wrote that our man Buddy was a “strong candidate to rejoin the Rockies as a pitching director or special assistant” with Foster’s departure. Sigh. I like Buddy. Don’t get me wrong. But same old Rockies, isn’t it? Recycle. Rinse. Repeat.

Hopefully, he remains in a good place in his life. And it would be nice if part of his legacy becomes shaking sense into his brother and CEO Dick Monfort. Dick called criticism of the Rockies fair. He told me before the 2024 season that the only way to quiet critics was to win. They have been the worst team in baseball since. I am cautiously optimistic Dick will follow through with significant moves. But they must be seismic. Here’s what needs to happen. President Greg Feasel must retire or get fired. General manager Bill Schmidt should get canned before the trade deadline — that likely won’t happen — or the day the season ends. And Dick must step away from all baseball involvement, allowing the new regime autonomy to hire roughly 15 new people while beefing up the scouting and analytics departments.
Keeler: The Rockies don’t need tweaks. They need an enema. Flush the same old voices, the same old faces, the same old ways of doing things. While Charlie was absolutely right, this particular ball is in Dick’s court. And I was optimistic as I read along … until I got the part about where Dick said an outsider doesn’t have the knowledge the team does as far as building a baseball team at altitude, as if it’s some proprietary family recipe for chicken or apple pie. Yes, smart outsiders will need a crash course. Yes, they’ll need to try and fail. But if they’re that smart, they’ll figure it out. The Rockies’ secret blend of herbs and spices is 138-264 since March 2023. Hire new people, Dick. Please.
Renck: The problem is the Rockies don’t get the benefit of doubt. Only actions matter. And when Dick makes excuses for the altitude — as he did in Sunday’s piece — it is disheartening. When is he going to realize these folks would be bad at their jobs at sea level, too? Slugger Charlie Condon should help the Rockies someday. But nothing will boost the Rockies like listening to Charlie Monfort.
Keeler: If you say you’ll consider fresh eyes in an interview and then, in that same interview, put down the idea of taking advice from new voices, you’re not just talking about both sides of your mouth. You’re talking in circles. No wonder anyone who tries to rock the boat within the Rockies’ baseball operations ends up jumping off the ship to keep their sanity. I weep for Charlie. His baseball team is drowning on dry land.
