Hillcrest strangulation leads to murder charge

An Old Town man suspected of strangling another man in front of a Hillcrest service station will face a Sept. 24 preliminary hearing.

Solomon Guerrero, 55, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of Jerry Puerile, 61, of Clairemont, who was fatally injured in front of a Shell service station at 330 Washington St. on March 1 at 4:54 p.m.

During a hearing on June 17, a prosecutor said nothing about the relationship between Guerrero and Puerile has been discussed in San Diego Superior Court.

Witnesses called police on March 1 to say a man was strangling another man and hitting his head against the pavement in front of the gas station in Hillcrest. Officers responded and found Puerile unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

Officers looked in the area and found a man matching the suspect’s description near the intersection of West Washington St. and Albatross St.

Guerrero was arrested without incident, police said.

Guerrero, who had previously worked as a manager, had been out on bond on a felony charge of making a criminal threat to a 35-year-old man on Feb. 14, according to court records. He is also charged with failure to register as a sex offender from another case.

Guerrero has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

In his last appearance before Judge Steven Stone on May 20, Stone affirmed Guerrero’s no-bail status. He remains in the George Bailey Detention Facility.
