While ease of use, design and performance are top considerations, I also factored in value for money in my verdict.

Known for innovation in charcoal cooking, Masterbuilt sets itself apart from its competition by offering some of the most advanced pieces of outdoor cooking tech on the market.
My experience with the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600, although starting on the wrong foot, was nothing short of awesome.
Delivery and assembly were a bit of a pain, sure, but once you fire it up for the first time, all of that is quickly forgotten.
Equipped with a gravity-fed charcoal hopper, built-in electric fan, meat probe and digital interface, this grill and smoker make barbecuing not only super easy (but a total pleasure).
You can even control your cook through an app on your smartphone – insanely cool.
What’s more, the results were consistently impeccable, always delivering that deep, woody flavour only achievable with charcoal-fuelled smoking.
If you’re looking to improve your BBQ game this summer, you should definitely consider picking one of these up – just be ready for a headache assembling it!
Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600 Digital Charcoal Grill + Smoker: Full review
After ordering my Masterbuilt BBQ, I was asked to select a delivery date and allocated a two-hour delivery window, which I later found would not be stuck to.
No big deal, but for those with extra-busy schedules, be warned: you will need to set aside a day to be home listening out for the door.
Also important to note is that delivery is made with a large truck, which I imagine would be a nightmare to navigate through any winding lanes or narrow driveways.
This delivery is ‘curbside’, which essentially means you will need to do the hard work of shifting this nearly 80kg BBQ from the roadside to your garden – make sure you have help on hand for this bit.
Oh, you’ll also be left with the wooden pallet it’s delivered on, so be prepared to have to tip this yourself at some point.

BUY HEREThe BBQ does not arrive set up and ready to go. Assembly is required out of the box, and it’s a real chore.
You’ll need some tools: a small cross-head screwdriver and a pair of pliers.
If you have one, a power drill with a cross-head drill bit would be super handy here, too, but I made do without.
The included guide states this build takes around an hour and 45 minutes and recommends that at least two people tackle it to reduce time and difficulty.
Enlisting my girlfriend to help, we set to work.
Around three hours and one very sore back later, the BBQ was assembled – safe to say the guide’s estimation of 1 hour 45 minutes is hopeful.
I also managed to leave some pretty noticeable scratches in the hood, since you need to flip the BBQ over during assembly.
I’m not too precious about cosmetics, but if you are, make sure you have a soft surface to assemble it on.
Now the BBQ was set up and ready to go, I couldn’t wait to get cooking.

BUY HEREAlthough heated by charcoal, you will need to connect the Masterbuilt to a power outlet, so bear that in mind before purchasing.
This powers the onboard digital interface and built-in fan.
The BBQ connects to your WiFi with help from a phone app, which is really straightforward; just follow the step-by-step guide in the ‘Operating Instructions’ section of the user manual.
Before getting to cooking, I gave the BBQ a quick burn off to get rid of any factory residue and then seasoned the grill.
This, my first experience of lighting it up, was surprisingly easy.
You simply load the hopper with regular charcoal (and wood chips if you wish), slot in a firelighter in the designated tray, light it, and bang, you’re off.
Simply set a target temperature on the digital interface or through the mobile app and close the lids on the hopper.
With the hopper doors secured shut, you should immediately hear the inbuilt fan kick in to gear, heating up the BBQ to your desired temperature.
Whenever the BBQ’s internal temperature falls below your target, the fan kicks in again, leading to super consistent internal temperatures.

BUY HEREThis BBQ gets its name from the 600 square inches of cooking space it boasts, offered by two main grills and a grill shelf, all of which are removable for easy cleaning.
In my experience, this was ample space, but if you’re looking to slow cook multiple large cuts of meat at once, you might want to consider investing in the 800 or 1050 variants.
Although this BBQ is primarily a smoker, providing indirect heat funnelled in from the charcoal hopper, you can get this thing up to impressive temperatures to achieve a pretty decent sear.
That said, if you’re a steak and burger puritan, I’d suggest looking elsewhere for more dedicated grilling models.
The Masterbuilt allows for up to four meat probes to be connected to the digital interface, with one being included as standard, which is super handy.
You can leave the probe in the meat with the lid closed, set a target temperature for the probe on the app, then wait for a notification on your phone to tell you that the meat’s finished cooking.
How cool is that?
Aside from the ease of use and design of the unit, a BBQ is ultimately only as good as the cooking results you get out of it, and I can happily report that the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600 Digital Smoker and Grill did not disappoint.
Everything I cooked up over two weeks came out amazingly, with excellent colouring and deep, smoky flavours.
Some of my favourites included a beef brisket, chorizo sausages and chicken wings.
As with any BBQ, you’ll need to give this thing a thorough clean after use, scrubbing down the grills and drip trays, and I’d stress that a decent bit of cleaning kit here goes a long way.
Not only does regularly cleaning the BBQ extend its lifetime and ensure cooking results are always top-notch, but it also eliminates the risk of a fire should debris catch fire unintentionally.

BUY HEREOverall, despite a rocky start with a long and slightly stressful assembly, the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600 thoroughly impressed.
It’s dead simple to use, the cooking results are absolutely top-notch, and it’s super convenient with the smartphone app functionality.
With a price tag of £699, the Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600 isn’t exactly a budget option.
But, if you’re looking to step up your cooking game this summer, this BBQ will not disappoint.
Masterbuilt Gravity Series 600 Digital Charcoal Grill and Smoker: The Verdict
Described on the Masterbuilt website as a ‘revolutionary BBQ’, this beast of a grill and smoker lives up to its reputation.
The combination of traditional charcoal cooking with the convenience of a digital interface and app makes for a uniquely satisfying and effortless BBQing experience.
With accurate, automatic internal temperature regulation and 600 square inches of cooking surface, you’ll be able to chef up feasts for yourself or a party with ease, with each dish infused with deep, rich flavours only achievable with charcoal/wood smoking.
I should also mention the Masterbuilt Series 600 is compatible with accessories like the Masterbuilt Pizza Oven and Rotisserie Kit, though I haven’t tried these out myself (yet).
Overall, despite assembly being a pain, the Gravity Series 600 Digital Grill and Smoker is sure to impress you and your guests for years to come.

BBQ FAQs
How to clean your BBQ?
Keeping your BBQ clean is crucial not only to prevent damage over time but also to ensure optimum taste each and every cook; we reached out to cleaning experts at Method for tips.
Method shared that before each session, “clear out leftover ash, burnt bits and grease [from your last cook]”.
Next, “squeeze a few drops of method’s washing up liquid into a bowl of warm water [and] wipe down all exterior surfaces with a sponge or cloth”.
“It’s important you give your BBQ a quick clean after each use and a more thorough deep clean every three months”.
“Quick hack: use a couple of aluminium foil balls to scrub the grates immediately after cooking”. Just make sure you use tongs since the foil balls will be hot!
For the exterior of your BBQ, use Method’s stainless steel cleaner to remove any grease, fingerprints, and weather marks.
“Lastly, your tools need some love, too. Simply give [your tools] a proper soak in warm water with a few drops of method’s washing up liquid and for anything particularly stubborn, give it a gentle scrub with a sponge or brush”.
What accessories do you need for your BBQ?
Having the correct accessories can elevate your BBQ experience to a whole new level.
Some essential bits of kit include a sturdy pair of tongs and a grill brush for cleaning the grates after use.
If you’re feeling fancy, a meat thermometer goes a long way to ensure your dishes are cooked to perfection.
For smoking enthusiasts, wood chips or chunks are a must to add depth of flavour to cook-ups.
For extra flair, a basting brush is perfect for applying marinades or sauces before, during or after your cook.

BUY HERETo protect your grill from the elements, invest in a BBQ cover, or at the very least a waterproof tarp – especially important if your setup has any electrical parts.
If you’re taking your BBQing to the beach or park, consider picking up an on-the-go accessories kit like the Spirit of Adventure BBQ Tool Set, which comes in a handy carry case.
How do you use a BBQ smoker?
Using a BBQ smoker requires patience and attention to detail to achieve perfectly smoked dishes.
Start by selecting your choice of wood chips or chunks, as they determine the flavour of your food.
Preheat the smoker to the desired temperature, typically between 110°C and 135°C, and prepare your food – lots of seasoning is key.
Regularly check the internal temperature of the food to ensure it cooks evenly.
If required, periodically spritz the food with a liquid such as apple juice, vinegar, or simply water to keep it moist and enhance the flavour while smoking.
If done correctly, the result should be a deeply flavourful dish infused with a rich, smoky aroma.
