Snooker world champion no-shows at tournament and posts holiday snaps with girlfriend

Luca Brecel forfeited his qualifying match for the Wuhan Open after snubbing the tournament.

The Belgian Bullet was absent for his scheduled clash with Haris Tahir in Leicester on Sunday.

Instead, Brecel shared a series of snaps to social media alongside his new girlfriend Shawney Demuyter.

The couple went public with their relationship as they enjoyed pizza and wine in Knokke, Belgium.

Meanwhile, Tahir was handed a 5-0 walkover victory as a result of Brecel’s absence.

It means the former world champion will not feature in the main draw for the tournament in August.

As a result, he will miss out on the £140,000 in prize money available to the winner.

The 30-year-old is next scheduled to be in action later this week, with qualifying for the British Open taking place.

Brecel is currently expected to face Switzerland’s Alexander Ursenbacher in Leicester.

His absence from Wuhan Open qualifying follows a tumble down the rankings two years on from his Crucible triumph.

The conclusion of this year’s World Snooker Championship saw Brecel lose his ranking points from his victory in 2023.

He now finds himself 39th in the world after failing to win a ranking event since clinching the title in Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Brecel admitted earlier this year he is more motivated by ‘entertaining’ fans than winning a second world title.

Ahead of this year’s tournament, he explained: “I’ve not really thought about the possibility of winning a second world title.

“I’m not that interested in it. If it happens it happens, but if it doesn’t, then it’s all good.

“I just don’t really think a lot about winning tournaments and stuff like that.

“I just like playing the game. I’m more of a Ronaldinho type of player in snooker, so it’s all about just entertaining and [having] fun.

“And also having a nice life around it, that’s more important to me! So yeah, no pressure.”

Despite his comments, Brecel went on to reach the quarter-finals by beating Ryan Day and Ding Junhui.

He was ultimately beaten by world number one Judd Trump in the last eight.
