After suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Botafogo in their second match of the competition, nothing short of a win will do for PSG when they face the Seattle Sounders in Washington on Monday.

PSG began the Club World Cup with a statement win, dismantling Atlético Madrid 4‑0 in Pasadena. 

Goals from Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu and a stoppage‑time penalty by Lee Kang‑in highlighted PSG’s domination and underlined their status as the 3/1 favourites to win the tournament.

However, on Thursday, PSG’s red-hot winning streak came to a stunning end. Brazilian side Botafogo stunned them 1‑0, with Igor Jesus’s 36th‑minute strike deciding the match and ending PSG’s winning streak. 

Despite 74.6% possession and nearly 750 passes, PSG couldn’t break through Botafogo’s organised defence. 

Coach Luis Enrique admitted his rotated squad – without the likes of Neves, Mendes, Ruiz and Marquinhos – lacked sharpness, and players like Vitinha and Kvaratskhelia didn’t help by squandering numerous opportunities. 

This shock defeat has thrown Group B wide open, dropping PSG to second place and putting pressure on them to win their final match to guarantee progression.

Luis Enrique’s team are now 10/11 to win the group and 1/10 to qualify for the Round of 16.

Seattle’s journey on home turf began with a 2‑1 defeat to Botafogo. Despite spirited play, they conceded goals from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus before Cristian Roldán pulled one back. 

The MLS franchise then hosted Atlético Madrid but fell to a 3‑1 defeat. 

Seattle found themselves 2-0 down after 47 minutes thanks to goals from Pablo Barrios and Axel Witsel. The Americans immediately responded with an Albert Rusnák strike on 50 minutes. 

But Atlético’s class told and Barrios wrapped up the win with his second of the night on 55 minutes. The goal coming so shortly after Rusnák got the Sounders back in the match knocked the wind out of Seattle’s sails and condemned them to their second defeat of the competition.

The defeat leaves them bottom of Group B with no points, mathematically out of qualification and awaiting a merciless final clash against PSG.
