Jay Johnson shares thoughts on Kevin Schnall’s ejection in 1st inning

The College World Series was rocked by early controversy when Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected in the bottom of the 1st inning.

After the game, LSU coach Jay Johnson was asked about seeing his counterpart tossed early in a championship game.

“That’s my friend, too, and somebody I have great respect for,” Johnson told reporters. “I didn’t have any reaction because I was so locked into what we needed to do in the game.

“I was ejected for arguing balls and strikes this year and they don’t like that when you argue balls and strikes. I’m not sure really what happened. I saw the first base coach arguing. Then he came out and I don’t know what was said. I don’t want to get into any of that.

“It’s a tough situation. But I literally moved past it immediately. I needed to be locked in on what our players needed from our coaching staff.”

In a statement, the NCAA said Schnall was ejected for continuing to argue balls and strikes after receiving a warning. Schnall shared his take on everything that went down after the game.

There’s 25,000 people there, and I vaguely heard a warning issued. … So, at that point, I can now hear him say he’s issuing a warning for arguing balls and strikes. At that point, I said, ‘Because you missed three at that point.’ Ejected.

Schnall is facing suspension. If Coastal Carolina had come back and won, the Chanticleers would have been without their head coach. Johnson’s Tigers, though, took care of business in Game 2 and ended the College World Series Finals.
