Former Swansea manager Luke Williams has shown his class by taking up a new job while on gardening leave.
The London-born coach was sacked by the Championship side in February and put on gardening leave, but he’s now been spotted working at Bristol Airport, helping disabled and limited mobility passengers get around the facilities.
Pictures emerged on social media of the 44-year-old at work in airport uniform, and despite scepticism over their authenticity a source close to the manager confirmed to The Athletic that they are genuine.
Having managed Notts County and Swindon Town before taking over the Swans in January 2024, Williams is lkely not short of cash.
Yet he has long discussed his relentless work ethic, having left school with no GCSE and living hand to mouth coaching children in Hackney for £1.50 a head.
He combined multiple jobs on his way to professional football, admitting: “Sometimes I would work 20 hours off the bat, get three or four hours’ kip, back to work.”
Williams added: “The realisation in my late-teens that life is going to be a monumental struggle for me, that life was about to become very tough and the world would become very hostile for somebody with no qualifications, no contacts, working class.
“That desire to feed myself and look after myself kicked in. I realised that I was capable of tolerating almost anything, providing that I would be able to have a roof over my head and something to eat.
“That is how the motivation began. I don’t think I’ve really moved away from that. I still feel as insecure in that way as I ever did.”
Working for London sides West Ham and Leyton Orient, he later stepped up from their youth teams to the role as Brighton’s under 21 manager.
From there he got his first senior coaching job in temporary charge of Swindon Town before joining Russell Martin as an assistant at MK Dons and Swansea.
Upon departing Swansea as an assistant in 2022 he trained to become an electrician before non-league side Notts County offered him a job.
Williams’ achievements at Notts County will likely see him back in football soonGettyThere he tackled financial powerhouse Wrexham in a titanic promotion bout which they finished second in with a points total that would have been a record in any other season.
Williams still achieved promotion through the play-offs and then took County to fifth in League Two before Swansea poached him back mid-season.
Things didn’t work out back in Wales with a record of 19 wins, 11 draws and 28 defeats in 58 games, but Williams will likely be given another job in football soon given his massive success with Notts County.
Until then Bristol Airport will be very lucky to have him.
