FedEx founder and executive chairman Frederick W. Smith, who transformed global commerce and his adopted hometown of Memphis, has died.

He was 80 years old. Smith was born on Aug. 11, 1944, in Marks, Mississippi.

“Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company. He was the heart and soul of FedEx – its PSP culture, values, integrity, and spirit. He was a mentor to many and a source of inspiration to all. He was also a proud father, grandfather, husband, Marine, and friend; please keep the entire Smith family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.” FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam, said in a note to FedEx employees the company posted on its website Saturday night.

As we begin to process this tremendous loss, it is important that we take care of one another and demonstrate the passion and compassion that Fred embodied every day. In the coming days and weeks, I know we will all find ways to honor his memory and pay tribute to his legacy.

After FedEx’s business took off in the 1980s, Smith began to wield considerable influence in both the business and political realms. He forged close ties with presidents and presidential candidates — George W. Bush and John McCain in particular — and members of U.S. Congress while advocating for minimal trade barriers, a key FedEx policy interest.

Smith's contributions extended beyond corporate success; he significantly impacted the Memphis community by creating thousands of jobs and fostering economic growth . His innovative strategies not only revolutionized package delivery but also set new standards for supply chain management worldwide. As CEO until 2022, Smith’s commitment to excellence and customer service laid the foundation for FedEx's enduring legacy within the logistics industry.

The passing of Fred Smith marks the end of an era for FedEx and serves as a reminder of his profound influence on modern commerce. His entrepreneurial spirit will be remembered as an inspiration for future generations seeking to innovate within their respective fields .
