The US has carried out multiple air strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, Donald Trump has said.
US B-2 bombers attacked sites at Fordow, Natanz and Esfaha, in a major escalation to the situation in the Middle East.
Trump posted on Truth Social: “We have completed our very successful attack. All planes are now outside of Iran air space.”
The attack risks a major retaliation from Tehran, potentially further destabilising the region.
The UK Government has yet to comment on the attack.
Israel was in ‘full coordination” with the US on the strikes, according to Israeli officials.
Trump said a “full payload of bombs” was dropped on the uranium enrichment site at Fordow, which was constructed beneath a mountain.
US ‘bunker-buster’ bombs were the only conventional weapons thought capable of penetrating the site, although the scale of the damage caused is yet to be confirmed.
Trump reposted a message saying that “Fordow is gone”.
It follows days of warnings from the US President aimed at Tehran over its nuclear programme.
He had appeared to give Iran two weeks to reach a deal that would avert the need for US strikes.
But Trump’s decision to attack will increase fears of a major escalation in the region, with US and UK forces in the region potential targets.
Two sources told Reuters that Israel had communicated their concerns to the Trump administration that they did not want to wait the two weeks, arguing that they have a limited window of opportunity to move against the deeply buried site at Fordow.
Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only, such as energy infrastructure.
The US on Saturday moved its B-2 bombers to the Pacific island of Guam, where they would be within range to strike Iran.

Split in the White House?
Vice President JD Vance has reportedly pushed back on the Israeli calls for US strikes, saying the United States should not be directly involved in the conflict and accused Israel of trying to drag the US into war.
The prospect of US strikes against Iran exposed divisions in the coalition of supporters that brought Trump to power, with some prominent members of his base urging him not to get the country involved in a new Middle East war.
Vance has frequently criticised past US involvement in conflicts, including Iraq and Afghanistan, but has lately defended Trump against Republican critics who urge the administration to stay out of the Iran conflict.

Trump, who campaigned on a promise to keep the US out of what he called “stupid” foreign wars, has himself seemed conflicted at times about whether to join the Israeli attack on Iran or focus on diplomatic efforts to end Tehran’s nuclear program. But his decision to authorise strikes will create further domestic uncertainty in Washington.
