Former India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has alleged that the head coach Gautam Gambhir played a role in the dismissal of Rishabh Pant in the first Test against the England National Cricket Team.
Dinesh Karthik said that a 'calm down' message from Gautam Gambhir contributed to the star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant's bizarre dismissal at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday, June 21.

Pant played a tremendous knock for India against the Three Lions and registered his seventh hundred in the longest format of the game.
He surpassed MS Dhoni in an elite list and became the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman with the most centuries in Test cricket. The 27-year-old has already hit Test tons in Australia, England, and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Pant's innings had a bizarre end to it, and his brain-fade cost him his wicket in the 108th over. Pacer Josh Tongue bowled a short of a good length ball that moved back into the batter.
Pant thought that the ball wouldn't come straight at him, and he shouldered arms, which led to the ball hitting him on the pads and the umpire raising his finger. Then, Rishabh Pant took a DRS, and the replays confirmed that the ball would have hit the stumps.
The wicketkeeper-batsman walked back to the dugout with 134 runs in his bag off 178 balls, and his innings consisted of 12 fours and 6 sixes.

— England Cricket (@englandcricket) June 21, 2025When a message was sent out to Pant, it curbed his style of play - Dinesh Karthik
While doing commentary for Sky Sports, Dinesh Karthik blamed head coach Gautam Gambhir for Rishabh Pant's dismissal.
He said that the 'calm down' message forced the wicketkeeper-batsman to change his style, which cost him his wicket.
“Also very interesting, when a message was sent out to Rishabh Pant, it curbed his style of play.
"He was just very carefree with his stroke making, and yet the feeling that a message was sent to tell him to calm down doesn't work for certain players, I guess,” said Dinesh Karthik on air.
What is the tone, what is the language.. - Dinesh Karthik
Karthik further said that Gautam Gambhir needs to learn how to get the best out of players like Pant, who are quite different.
“As a coach, it's completely understandable when you want to get a message across to the batter. But over time, you realise, for certain players, how you send that message becomes very important, what is the tone, what is the language used that gets the best out of the batter,” he said.
“Maybe with Rishabh Pant, it needs to be a different way in which you get things done,” added Karthik.
Meanwhile, in a video going viral on social media, Pant seemingly predicted his dismissal as he was seen telling his batting partner Ravindra Jadeja, “Sooja diya hai yaar isne maar-maar ke, same jagah maare ja raha hai (My knee is swelled up, he is hitting me in the same place).” And on the next ball, Pant fell to Tongue.
