Chapter marks 70 years of service

WARREN — For the past 70 years, the Beta Chi Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International has focused on promoting excellence in education, professional growth and personal development of its members.

The Beta Chi Chapter celebrated its 70-year milestone this spring at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

The state organization chapter was organized June 28, 1955, when state President Edith Hadley initiated 24 local educators at the Allen House in Kinsman.

Eileen Niemi, 97, Beta Chi’s lone surviving charter member, was among those at the birthday celebration.

“It’s wonderful to be part of this for 70 years. I am happy to be here with everyone,” said Niemi, a retired high school English and Spanish teacher.

The Cortland resident said she likes how there are different generations involved in the organization. Niemi said the friendships and spending time with others is what she enjoys the most having been involved since the 1950s.

Co-presidents Mary Bumstead and Marilyn Stanton said Beta Chi is one of 67 Ohio chapters totaling 2,458 members. There are chapters in all 50 states and in 17 countries.

Bumstead said the local Beta Chi Chapter has 56 members. The chapter meets the first Thursday of each month at different locations. Gatherings include a dinner, educational speaker or program, entertaining activity and business meeting.

Bumstead said programs this year have included “A Day After Enslavement” by Allison Smith; a presentation by local nature photographer Nick Kerosky; antique specialist Shawn Mark; a bingo game night; and a program on the impact of artificial intelligence within the classroom by Carrie Sinkele.

She said programs are planned for the membership each year.

Bumstead said the birthday event’s music was provided by Heather Fetrow who is the founder and soloist for “Voices of Women” which inspires and celebrates the spirit of education for past, present and future generations.

Bumstead said Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is an international professional organization for women educators both for those currently teaching or those who are retired.

She said the original society was founded at the University of Texas in Austin in May 1929 by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton and 11 female educators.

“The organization focuses on promoting excellence in education, professional growth, and personal development of its members worldwide. The business of the society is conducted at the local chapter, the Ohio state organization chapter, and international Delta Kappa Gamma levels,” Bumstead said.

She said millions of dollars in scholarships and grants are invested in studies and projects by members in the states and worldwide.

Bumstead said state, regional and international conferences and conventions bring together members to renowned speakers, breakout learning sessions and camaraderie.

She said the time spent together by fellow educators is rewarding for the membership.
