Irvine dog trainer couple suspected in deaths of 10 dogs, police say

An Irvine dog trainer and his girlfriend were arrested on Thursday, June 19 after police discovered at least 10 dogs had died while in the couple’s care, police said.

A pet owner contacted police on Wednesday evening to report that they received a message from their dog trainer that their dog had died in its sleep and was cremated. Irvine police’s Animal Services Unit discovered that at least 10 dogs had died in the trainer’s care.

The trainer, Kwong “Tony” Chun Sit, 53, of Irvine, and his girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, 23, of Vista, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and destruction of evidence on the night of June 19. Police say Sit operated as a dog trainer across Southern California under various company names, including “Happy K9 Academy.”

Police recovered multiple dogs at various crematoriums. Now, police say their priority is finding out if the dogs’ deaths were intentional or accidental.

The Irvine Police Department is seeking additional pet owners who may have been told their dog suddenly died under Sit’s care or those with information related to the case. Information can be sent to [email protected].
