ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Residents at St. John’s Senior Living and Care held a special ceremony to ring in the summer solstice Friday afternoon.
Residents took to the stage to put on a play inspired by the season’s themes and also held a seed planting ceremony.
Each seed symbolized a personal affirmation or intention for the summer ahead.
“A lot of our residents often will express how important it is for them to be outside,” said Alisa Unell, a spiritual life partner at St. John’s. “They don’t always have the words to say that its holy or sacred. But it does something spiritual to them, it changes the way they feel about the world, changes the way they feel about being inside a facility.”
Organizers say the ceremony spotlights how older adults express their creativity, spirituality and joy.
