Marlee Matlin is sharing the reason why she nearly walked away from her starring role in CODA, the 2021 coming-of-age film that won an Academy Award for Best Picture.
The 59-year-old actress — who has been Deaf since she was 18 months old — got candid about the topic while chatting exclusively with Parade for the June cover story. She also touched on it in her new documentary, Not Alone Anymore, in which she revealed that she threatened to leave the movie if another Deaf actor wasn’t cast as her onscreen husband.

“A hearing person could not have done justice to this film,” she told Parade. “Authenticity would have been out the window. So I was protecting us.”
She continued: “It was the first time I really put my foot down to say I’d walk if you hired a hearing person. As a Deaf person, I don't get work that easily, so to turn it down, I got to the point. … It would have ruined the look and the authenticity of the film if we had gone that direction. I can’t even imagine.”
CODA not only won Best Picture at the 94th annual Academy Awards, but Troy Kotsur — who was cast in the role she fought for — took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first male Deaf actor to win an acting Oscar and the second overall.
