Power-hungry Meta signs nuclear and geothermal deals
Meta, the parent of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, this month signed deals securing sources of nuclear and geothermal power as it races to secure enough energy to develop AI.

On 3 June, it signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy for nuclear power from the Clinton Clean Energy Centre in Clinton, Illinois.

The deal gives the single-reactor Clinton plant a new lease of life.

The loss-making, 1.12GW plant had been scheduled to start shutting down in 2027 upon the expiration of a 10-year Zero Emissions Credit scheme passed by the Illinois state legislature in 2016.

The Meta deal, which takes effect in 2027, means it can continue generating for at least another 20 years from then.

Constellation Energy said the deal would let Clinton increase its output by 30MW through plant upgrades, preserve 1,100 high-paying jobs, and deliver $13.5m in annual taxes.

Meta said it was sending a “demand signal” for nuclear that would help existing units stay in operation and encourage developers to increase capacity.

“Our investments in nuclear energy ensure that we will have the robust energy infrastructure needed to power the AI innovations that are set to spark economic growth and prepare our communities for the future,” Meta said.

    Geothermal without water

Then on 12 June, Meta signed a contract with XGS Energy to develop 150MW of next-generation geothermal energy in New Mexico.

XGS Energy’s proprietary technology produces geothermal power without water. It will power Meta’s data centre operations in the state.

XGS chief executive Josh Prueher said: “We are eager to feed clean, water-independent geothermal power into the New Mexico market at a scale uniquely possible with XGS technology.”

“Advances in AI require continued energy to support infrastructure development,” said Urvi Parekh, global head of energy at Meta.
