As the original summer blockbuster celebrates its 50th anniversary, director Steven Spielberg admitted that he might have bitten off more than he could chew with Jaws.
"When the film wrapped Martha's Vineyard, I had a full-blown panic attack," Spielberg said in an interview with People published on June 20. "I was in it, shall I say, over my head, for about seven or eight months on Martha's Vineyard. It was, logistically, I think the most difficult movie I think I'll ever make."
The Raiders of the Lost Ark director continued, "I couldn't breathe; I thought I was having a heart attack. I couldn't get a full breath of air. I kept going to the bathroom and splashing water on my face. I was shaking. And I was out of it — I was completely out of it. I had a great crew, and yet I felt responsible for everybody there. And I felt really responsible for keeping them there for as long as I had to stay. And I think I just lost it.”

The problems Spielberg faced with the mechanical shark seen in the film (nicknamed Bruce) has been well documented over the years. Plus, none of the cast and crew expected filming on the water to be as difficult as it proved to be. The issues led to a much longer shooting schedule than originally anticipated.
“Even though we wrapped in Martha's Vineyard, the film kept shooting for another two months,” Spielberg told the publication.
Despite the setbacks, Spielberg stuck it out and Jaws went on to become one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time. However, even though the Oscar-winning producer described its “success” as “fantastic,” that didn’t stop the mental effects caused by shooting the movie.
"It didn't stop me waking up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, where the sheets would be soaking wet," Spielberg explained. "We didn't have the words PTSD in those days, and I had consistent nightmares about directing Jaws for years afterwards."
