India cricket team have included four all-rounders in their squad for the five-match Test series against England. The tour to the UK will mark the start of a fresh World Test Championship cycle for Shubman Gill and co. While the trio of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar have been retained from the series against Australia, Shardul Thakur returns to the side after almost a year and a half.
Rating India’s all-rounders
1. Ravindra Jadeja (7/10)
The southpaw is the most experienced all-rounder among the lot currently, following the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin. Having played 80 Tests, he has 323 wickets and 3370 runs to his name. However, Jadeja did not taste much success in India’s last overseas tour. In Australia, he only managed to take 4 wickets in 3 games while scoring 135 runs with the bat.
While he is certain to make it to the playing XI for almost all games, a lot depends on how Jadeja will step up and deliver with the bat in England.
2. Shardul Thakur (9/10)
Thakur last played in a Test for India in December 2023 in the series against South Africa. Thereafter, he was ignored from India’s Test setup entirely in 2024. During his absence from the Indian side, Shardul returned to domestic cricket where he put up consistent all-round performances for Mumbai, thus earning his way back into the Indian team for the series against England.
Thakur is no stranger to playing in England, having scored three half-centuries and taken 12 wickets from 4 Tests played in the UK.
Shardul was in exceptional form in domestic cricket. He took 35 wickets and amassed 505 runs from 9 matches in the Ranji Trophy 2024/25, emerging as a most valuable player for Mumbai. He then followed it up with 13 wickets in IPL 2025. In the recently concluded series against England Lions, he managed to take two wickets. Thakur slammed an unbeaten 122-run knock in the intra–squad game between India and India A while also taking some wickets on Day 1 of the game to strengthen his case for a spot in the playing XI.
3. Nitish Kumar Reddy (6/10)
Nitish Reddy had a rather impressive 2024 that saw him fast-tracked to Tests. In his debut series against Australia, he scored 298 runs in 5 matches, including a fighting century. He tasted very little success with the ball, managing to take just 5 wickets in the entire tour.
The Andhra Pradesh all-rounder did not have a good season in IPL 2025, delivering sub-par performances with the bat. He never bowled in the tournament.
In the series against England Lions, he registered scores of 7, 52*, 34 and 42* while managing to take just two wickets. It remains to be seen if India will go ahead with an experienced Shardul in their playing XI or if Nitish will be picked ahead for the 1st Test against England.
4. Washington Sundar (5/10)
Among all the all-rounders in India’s squad, Sundar has gotten the least game time leading upto the series against England. After delivering some standout all-round performance in the series against New Zealand at home, he was included in the side for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well.
However, he tasted very limited success with the ball in Australia, managing to take just 3 wickets in 3 Tests. He did fairly well with the bat though, amassing 115 runs in 6 innings, including one fifty.
He did not play in either of the unofficial Tests in the India A series against England Lions. Neither was he among wicket-takers or run-scorers in the intra-squad game as well. It looks like he is present in the squad as a back up spin all-rounder and his chances of making it to the playing XI look very bleak.
