CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Chesterfield County jury has found Emanuel Bedford guilty of murder and grand larceny in the 2021 killing of his girlfriend, Deidre Reid. The sentencing was swift -- life without parole.
The verdict came on Thursday, June 19, day four of the trial, which continued despite the Juneteenth federal holiday.
Bedford, who represented himself in court, chose not to enter a plea deal on Wednesday, instead letting the case move forward to a verdict.
Day 3: Man accused of Pageland mother’s murder considers entering plea, changes mindJudge Robert Hood acknowledged Bedford’s efforts in self-representation earlier in the trial, saying, “I saw points you were trying to make, and you did a good job of representing yourself. I do want to commend you for that.”
The case centered around disturbing evidence, including phone records, vehicle tracking, and DNA findings. Investigators traced Reid’s phone from Charlotte to Georgia, where pieces of her car and personal belongings were found.
Her car was later pulled from a pond in Aiken County, with blood matching her DNA found inside.
Man accused of Pageland mother’s murder to defend himself as trial beginsTestimony from family members also revealed a troubled history between Reid and Bedford. On Wednesday, her brother James Reid recalled helping her leave a dangerous situation involving Bedford back in 2013. When Bedford asked him what he’d do differently if the investigation were to start again, James Reid replied bluntly: "Lock you up."
With Thursday's verdict, the nearly three-year search for justice in Deidre Reid’s murder comes to a close.
