Falls police department to restart July 1

NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Police Department will return to operations July 1, with police Chief John Barco and

20 part-time officers providing protection to the community.

Barco told village council Wednesday the officers will be at this year’s Fourth of July festival the week of June 30 providing protection and also directing traffic, especially on July 4 with large crowds expected for the parade and the fireworks display at the park.

Interim Village Manager / Finance Director Jamie Vernaccini said the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office no longer will provide day-to-day service effective June 30.

The funds that were used for the sheriff’s office, along with some grant money, will be used for police department costs.

Vernaccini said grants are being sought for police equipment.

Barco said the hiring process has exceeded his expectations, with the 20 officers completing drug screenings and background checks.

He said he met with 911 officials and completed all paperwork needed to have the LEADs system in operation.

Team Office and Hudson Communications also have inspected police department in-house computers and other technology, as well as vehicle radios and communication devices.

Barco said the public can meet with police officers at the Fourth of July Festival and also National Night Out, which is planned Aug. 5. Firefighters and emergency medical service personnel also will be part of National Night Out.

“There are many people who want the police department back. Our department will be very transparent. We ask for patience as we get started,” he said.

Councilwoman Julie Stimpert, at-Large, said Trumbull County commissioners have reached out to Newton Falls officials offering to help bring back the police department. She said Congressman David Joyce’s office has also contacted village officials about grant money available.

“It is exciting to know we have support from outside the village with our police department,’’ Stimpert said.

Barco said four police vehicles that are not able to be used will be disposed of since the costs to fix the vehicles would be too high. Mayor David Hanson said the safety service forces are ready for the upcoming summer festival and other holidays. He praised Barco and others for spending their own time to get the police department up and running.

    FIRE BUILDINGS

In other business, Stimpert said the Newton Falls Joint Fire District is having an analysis done on fire station property across from Arby’s and the other fire property at the municipal court building across from McDonald’s,

“The analysis will let us know which site is the best scenario for the fire department and the equipment to be. We are looking at our options and what will suit us best. There is not enough space at either fire station location,’’ Stimpert said.

She said there is fire equipment stored at two locations, including a nearby car wash. Stimpert said officials also are looking at a possible third location and are trying to sell fire department property off First Street. The analysis is expected to be done by fall.

Stimpert said the fire district also is addressing staffing issues and compensation of firefighters with a special meeting set for June 24 to discuss these issues.
