Ben Davison insists his controversial corner advice during Anthony Joshua’s devastating defeat to Daniel Dubois has been misconstrued.
AJ was brutally knocked out in the fifth stanza by Dubois in front of a capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium last September.
Heading into what proved to be the final round, Joshua had been down three times, and with the writing seemingly already on the wall, Davison told his fighter to ‘roll the dice’ and uncork the right uppercut.
Joshua came out for round five, throwing powerful naked right hands with nothing to set them up.
One of them rocked Dubois, but as the Watford powerhouse lunged forward in the hopes of turning the tide, he was caught by a perfectly timed straight that left him flat on his face.
The savage stoppage led to an inquest into Davison’s corner advice from the boxing fraternity.
Fellow trainer Shane McGuigan, who was on commentary duties for BBC Five Live that night, was one of the most vocal critics.
“I think that is dangerous advice there to be honest, getting him to bring it up (uppercut) off the double jab,” he said of Davison’s pep talk.
“Daniel throws that right hand straight off that double jab, he is going to walk straight on to a short right hand.
“If you ask me, I would say keep your hands up tight and get through these next few rounds.”
In response to McGuigan’s criticisms, Davison told talkSPORT: “He is saying that Daniel puts a right hand behind the double jab. He would be 100 per cent correct.
“But we have asked AJ to throw a double jab and bring it up the middle (uppercut).
Davison told Joshua to ‘roll the dice’ moments before disasterGetty Davison insists he didn’t mean ‘roll the dice’ in the traditional senseMark Robinson/Matchroom“Daniel was defending AJ’s right hand by ducking underneath it.
“Therefore, if he is ducking underneath your right hand, then the correct adjustment is to dip him onto the right uppercut.”
Asked what he meant by ‘roll the dice’, Davison replied: “The roll the dice is something he has worked on throughout camp, which is throw the double jab and bring it up through the middle.
“Against Hrgovic, he was regularly getting underneath Hrgovic’s right hand.
“Hrgovic then started to throw an uppercut, but he didn’t bring his feet in close enough to deliver the shot.
“Roll the dice didn’t actually mean go out there and take [one to give one].
“What we meant was that it’s something you have worked on and you haven’t thrown it throughout the fight.”
