Security guards arrested after ’embarrassing’ brawl broke out in front of shocked Wimbledon fans

Wimbledon spectators were once stunned by a surprise altercation that required police intervention at the All England Club.

In the 2022 tournament’s opening week, a guard from the contracted security service Knights Group Security took issue with a co-worker.

Wimbledon security are there to protect fans, but one year saw them fight each otherAFP

The Guardian reported that one employee was accused of being on their break for three hours.

A fight then broke out in front of fans who were walking around the grounds at the Grand Slam event.

One spectator is claimed to have shouted for security, although they probably didn’t realise that they were actually involved in the scuffle.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police broke up the brawl and made three arrests as per a statement.

“At 2pm on Friday, 1 July, officers on duty at the Wimbledon tennis championships were alerted to an altercation within the grounds.

“Officers attended and three men working at the event were arrested on suspicion of affray.

“There were no reports of any injuries. They were taken into custody and were later bailed until a date in late July.”

An anonymous Knights Group Security worker told The Guardian that the fight between their guards was ’embarrassing’.

“To have a fight in front of fans is not a good look,” they added. “It has damaged the company’s reputation. I can’t believe they did that.”

Knights Group Security joined Wimbledon in 2020 to provide security managers and stewards in the grounds and non-public areas.

In addition, Carlisle Security Services Limited joined at the same time to work around the perimeter of the site in south west London.

Wimbledon security has undergone various changes in recent years in response to events both at and away from the tournament.

Concrete roadside barriers were installed in 2017 after three terror attacks in London earlier in the year.

Vehicles drove into pedestrians on the Westminster and London bridges, whilst another hit people near a mosque in Finsbury Park.

More recently in 2023, security plans were altered following a swathe of protests at sporting events.

Just Stop Oil protestors blocked the England cricket team bus and ran onto the pitch during the Gallagher Premiership final that year.

The Ashes were also targeted by the environmental activist group to leave Wimbledon chief Michelle Dite wary of potential disruption.

“We have plans in place to mitigate the risks,” the operations director at the All England Club said.

“Should an incident occur, the appropriate specialist teams will respond. The safety and security of all our players, colleagues and visitors is paramount.”

Dite added: “Based on what has happened at other sporting events, and on the advice from our key partners, we have reviewed our security plans, which have now been uplifted for The Championships accordingly.”

However, Just Stop Oil interrupted play at Wimbledon in 2023 as they threw orange confetti onto Court 18.

The second set of the first round clash between Grigor Dimitrov and Sho Shimabukuro was halted by the confetti and a jigsaw puzzle.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass and criminal damage.

Ahead of the 2025 Championships, Wimbledon have continued to insist that spectator safety is of paramount importance to them.

They work closely with the Metropolitan Police, National Counter Terrorism Security Office and National Protective Security Authority.

Wimbledon also have 24/7 CCTV, as well as frequent but irregular foot and dog patrols around the grounds.

Furthermore, they have technology that tracks drones that fly in the vicinity of the tournament.
