Anne Burrell Found Unconscious and Unresponsive at Scene of Death

New details into the death of Anne Burrell have emerged.

Us Weekly spoke to a representative from the New York City Police Department on Tuesday, June 17, who revealed the Food Network star was pronounced dead “at the scene” in her Brooklyn home after authorities responded to a 911 call which led to the discovery of “an unconscious and unresponsive” 55-year-old female.

    The details, originally reported on by People, noted that authorities from the 76th Precinct were alerted to the scene “at approximately 7:50 a.m.” on Tuesday. It also noted that a cause of death is pending with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.

    An investigation “remains ongoing,” per NYPD officials.

    Authorities added that Burrell was not named as the deceased, however Us confirmed on Tuesday that Burrell’s home address matched the residence provided by police in their statement.

    Us confirmed Burrell’s death via a statement from her family on Tuesday. “Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,” the statement read. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”

    Burrell is survived by her mother, Marlene, and sister, Jane, along with husband Stuart Claxton (whom she married in October 2021) and his son, Javier.

    The culinary personality rose to fame after starring as a sous chef to fellow Food Network star Mario Batali in the Iron Chef America pilot episode.

    Burrell remained by the side of Batali, 64, on the show from 2005 to 2009.

    While Batali was yet to publicly comment on Burrell’s death on Tuesday, other foodie stars took to social media to express their grief, including Kardea Brown, the host of the Food Network’s Delicious Miss Brown. “In utter disbelief. I have no words,” she wrote via an Instagram Story that day.

    The Food Network also shared a statement that paid tribute to the beloved icon. “We are deeply saddened to share the news that beloved chef, Anne Burrell, passed away this morning,” the network said in a statement shared via Instagram on Tuesday. “Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.”

    Sandra Lee, TV chef and author, Will Coleman, a fellow cookbook author, and Queer Eye star Bobby Berk were among the other celebrities to pay their online respects.
