ALBANY, N.Y. – A bill has passed both chambers of the state legislature that would give state troopers time off after traumatic experiences on the job that result in someone dying or being seriously hurt.
The bill, called the “State Trooper Mental Health Bill,” would give troopers at least 20 days of paid leave after the trooper causes someone’s death or serious injury. Troopers involved in a critical incident but weren’t the direct cause of harm would also get 15 days paid leave.
This time would be for troopers to process the trauma and are not put in a position where they have to deal with stigma or financial penalties for taking extended time off.
“First responders should be able to come back to work when they are ready, not when they’re told to come back,” said Trooper Richard Albert. “They need time to process and to heal. They and only they know when they’re ready to come back to work when they’ve had enough time and enough space to recover in order to return as a healthier and more effective individual.”
For the bill to become law, Gov. Kathy Hochul has to sign it.
