Iconic Actor, 67, Describes Being Knighted by King Charles With 1 Word

Legendary actor Gary Oldman has been knighted by King Charles on June 13. In an interview with Deadline, the Harry Potter star described the honor and said that he was absolutely "gobsmacked."

"It’s actually sort of mind-boggling. I’m gobsmacked," Oldman, 67, told the outlet. The Oscar-winner was recognized by the British monarchy for his services to drama, according to The Guardian.

After finding out that he'd be receiving such an honor, Oldman shared an official statement.

"To be included in the long lineage of extraordinary actors, artists, and others who hold this title fills me with indescribable humility and pride. It is emotional, humbling and flattering all at the same time to be recognized amongst them," he said.

Also in his interview with Deadline, Oldman said that he spoke with another knighted actor — Sir Anthony Hopkins — about his new title.

"Tony said that he only uses it in America because they expect it. Actually they’re rather offended if you don’t use it," he said.

Others who made King Charles' birthday honors list in 2025 included Roger Daltrey of The Who and retired soccer star David Beckham, the latter of whom was recognized for his services to sport and charity.

"I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour," Beckham said in a statement. "It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I’m immensely proud and it’s such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.”
