Major Home Goods Retailer to Close Dozens of Stores This Fall

Popular home goods and accessories brand At Home is closing nearly 30 stores this fall.

The Dallas-based retailer currently operates over 250 locations across the country, but the company said that number will dip to just below 225 this October as it plans to shutter 26 "underperforming" storefronts in several states.

The bleak update immediately follows statements from the company's CEO, Brad Weston, explaining that At Home had voluntarily entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of an agreement with lenders to "eliminate substantially all" of its almost $2 billion debt. The deal also offered an additional $200 million of support to keep the company pushing forward as it navigates the process.

At Home announced it would be closing 26 stores by Tuesday, Sept. 30, as part of its restructuring to "improve our ability to compete in the marketplace in the face of continued volatility and increase the resilience of our business for the long term."

According to court documents reviewed byUSA Today, stores in 12 states are set to close their doors one last time, including in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin:

While shoppers have expressed discontent at seeing the home decor and furnishings chain close, they don't seem all too surprised, with many citing the alarming "trend" of brick-and-mortar retailers (like Torrid, Rite Aid and CVS) that have all recently announced mass closures affecting hundreds of stores in dozens of states.
