Populous worked alongside Malaysian practice Hijjas Architects + Planners on a design that mixes a modern stadium vibe with traditional Malaysian features.
The 45,000 capacity stadium will mirror the original’s silhouette and curved roof and will meet FIFA’s standards for international football.
A fixed roof made of double-layered ETFE cushions will let light in while a sliding pitch that can move in and out along the length of the stadium will let the venue host other sporting events and concerts.
The stadium will sit in a 310,000-sq-m garden complex with a multi-purpose hall, training grounds and cultural spaces.
The old Shah Alam Stadium will be demolished, and the new stadium is due to open in 2029.
Brett Wightman, Populous’ director, said: “The new stadium will be part of a landmark active and thriving community development where people can live, worship, work and play.”
