Vaibhav Suryavanshi has achieved stardom like most don’t at the tender age of 14. To play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), arguably the most competitive T20 tournament in the world, isn’t easy. But Suryavanshi hasn’t just made his debut. In his third match for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), the southpaw scored a hundred.
Right now, he holds the record of being the youngest-ever centurion in T20 history. But that isn’t all. After Chris Gayle, Suryavanshi is the one to hit the fastest IPL hundred as well. He’s got all the makings of once-in-a-generation talent. Naturally, this led him to be compared with Sachin Tendulkar.
Shouldn’t compare Tendulkar & Suryavanshi
Considered the greatest ever cricketer by man, Tendulkar had already made his India debut at 16. He’s the youngest-ever batter to score a Test hundred in Australia, England, and South Africa. Also, no one younger than him has a half-country in Test cricket in Pakistan and New Zealand. He’s the definition of a once-in-a-lifetime cricketer.
Two years younger than how old Tendulkar was when he made his debut, does Suryavanshi have the same pedigree as him? According to former Indian selector and Tendulkar’s ex-teammate Venkatapathy Raju, we should all wait for the youngster to perform in domestic cricket and then think about judging him with Tendulkar or making claims about him making his India debut soon.
“Yes, yes, he will take a lot of time. He has to be one of those guys who needs to do well in U-19 World Cups. He has to perform quite a bit in domestic cricket. Four-day games. And we can give time. See, talent-wise, we’ve already seen him, what he can do with a white ball, right?” Raju, who was an India selector from 2007 to 08, told PTI.
“It depends on the consistency, right? We’re a firm believer. We might talk about somebody like Sachin, right? First, Ranji Trophy debut, he got 100. Duleep Trophy, he got 100. Rest of India, he got 100, right? All three-day, four-day or five-day games. So, like that, I think when you know the talent, we should give him enough time to go and play, do well, and you feel that he’s really good enough and he can perform, why not? We can still bring him in,” he said.
If we compare the trajectory, Suryavanshi is ahead in terms of age but not achievement. He’s represented Bihar in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy but has just one fifty in 17 innings. He did well in the 2024 ACC U-19 Asia Cup and is currently part of India’s U19 team, which is touring England.
But as Raju mentions, it wouldn’t be fair to compare Tendulkar and Suryavanshi for either of them. One should let the 14-year-old develop his game. Prove himself in the domestic circuit and continue to thrive in the IPL before coming to conclusions. Young prodigies often can’t replicate their past success and no one wants Suryavanshi to be a forgotten player by pushing him into international cricket too soon.
