Where heatwave will hit UK with temperatures of up to 32°C

The UK is expected to experience its first heatwave of 2025 this weekend, with temperatures rising above 30°C in places.

London and the east of England are likely to see the warmest conditions, though heatwave thresholds could also be breached across the Midlands and parts of Wales.

An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days, with thresholds varying from 25°C to 28°C in different parts of the UK.

Temperatures are expected to build gradually throughout the week. On Wednesday, the highest temperatures are expected to be around 27ºC, rising to 29ºC on Thursday.

In London – where the threshold is 28ºC – temperatures could reach at 29ºC on Thursday and 31ºC on Friday, peaking at 32ºC on Saturday.

The heat will then spread further north, with Manchester and Newcastle upon Tyne enjoying temperatures into the late 20s, along with the Midlands and parts of Wales.

Tony Wisson, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “By the beginning of the weekend we could very well be meeting heatwave thresholds in places.

“While the warmest temperatures are likely across London and the east of England, by Saturday heatwave thresholds could be reached across much of the Midlands, low-lying areas bordering the Peak District and even parts of east Wales.”

Some parts of the country could surpass temperatures in holiday hotspots such as Lisbon in Portugal and Barcelona in Spain, which are predicted to reach 29ºC on Saturday, and Nice, France, where it will be 30ºC.

Forecasters have also warned that some rain is still possible in parts by the end of the week, with localised, heavy showers forecast depending on how humid it gets.

How long will the heatwave last for?

The rise in temperatures is down to an area of high pressure, the Met Office said. This is expected to move away from the UK into Monday, taking the warmer weather with it.

However, there is uncertainty in how quickly this will happen, meaning heatwave conditions could linger in some places.

Mr Wisson added: “Temperatures are likely to peak in the low 30s Celsius this weekend before easing sometime early week. Some forecast models even allow temperatures to rise into the mid 30s of Celsius by Monday.

“While this is feasible, it is considered a lower-likelihood scenario.”

The Met Office defines a heatwave as at least three consecutive days of temperatures above what would normally be expected from that time of the year. The threshold is different for each county, depending on where they are in the country, and it is usually accompanied by high humidity.

In London, temperatures must breach 28ºC for three days in a row for there to be a heatwave, while in the East Riding of Yorkshire temperatures need to remain above 26ºC.

Generally speaking, the threshold is higher in the south-east, with the minimum value being 25ºC in parts of Wales, the Midlands and the South West.

While heatwaves are most common in the summer, which sees slow-moving, high-pressure systems remain over an area for an extended period of time, they can also occur in other parts of the year as well.

Because the UK is centred below a jet stream, high pressure can often develop over the country, resulting in persistent dry and settled weather.
