If the Club World Cup is to be a success, FIFA needs some of the non-European teams to go deep in the tournament.

If the quarter-finals are made up exclusively of teams from UEFA, interest in the entire event could fade pretty quickly.

The Brazilian quartet offers the most hope of a surprise winner or finalist, with Palmeiras and Flamengo the duo most likely to threaten the European representatives.

What of Fluminense? They certainly have a kind draw in their favour, with the club from Rio de Janeiro paired with Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns in Group F, the most eclectic of the eight first-round sections.

Dortmund are a decent side, clearly, but they are not of the calibre of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich or Manchester City. Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns should be beatable.

However, Fluminense are not in the best possible shape heading into the Club World Cup. They qualified by winning the Copa Libertadores in 2023, but times have been tough since then.

Fluminense sold some of their star players after that triumph, after which they were involved in a relegation battle in Brazil last year. They have made a more encouraging start to the 2025 season, but Fluminense are not the force they were a couple of years back.

Renato Gaucho’s side will kick-start their campaign against Borussia Dortmund, the clear favourites to top this group.

BVB endured a poor start to the 2024/25 season under Nuri Sahin, but they came on strong late on once Niko Kovac was able to get his ideas across to the squad.

Dortmund ultimately finished in the top four of the Bundesliga to qualify for the Champions League. Over the final 10 matchdays in Germany, they outperformed even Bayern Munich.

Dortmund have momentum behind them and all the indications suggest they will be taking this tournament seriously. Buoyed by a decent draw for the group stage, Kovac’s team are potential dark horses in the USA.

“We don’t really come up against South American or Asian clubs,” Kovac admitted in the build-up to the Club World Cup. 

“You compete in Europe in the Champions League or with your national team, but facing these teams is completely new territory for us. We don’t quite know what to expect. That only adds to the anticipation.”

Borussia Dortmund were a team transformed by Kovac towards the end of the Bundesliga season, and theirs is a confident camp ahead of their first Club World Cup outing.

It is only just over a year since BVB were competing in a Champions League final, so the threat they pose should not be taken lightly.

Like their fellow South American outfits, Fluminense are desperate to make a positive impression at this tournament.

They have regressed since their Copa Libertadores triumph two years ago, though, and even with Thiago Silva at centre-back Fluminense will struggle to keep Dortmund’s attack quiet.

Borussia Dortmund ended the Bundesliga campaign with five wins from their last six matches, but they still struggled to keep the back door shut at times.

BVB shipped eight goals in those final six games, so opposition attacks can still get at their defence.

That gives Fluminense a degree of hope for Tuesday’s clash at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Only Flamengo and Cruzeiro have outscored Renato Gaucho’s charges in the first couple of months of the Brazilian league season.

Goals at both ends looks like a smart selection for this Brazil vs Germany contest.

Serhou Guirassy to score any time

Serhou Guirassy missed the start of the 2024/25 season following his summer switch from Stuttgart to Borussia Dortmund.

But the Guinea international more than made up for lost time once he had regained full fitness.

Despite Dortmund’s inconsistencies, Guirassy enjoyed a wonderful debut campaign at Signal Iduna Park.

His 45 appearances in all competitions yielded 34 goals, including 13 strikes in 14 Champions League appearances.

Guirassy is a genuine contender for the top scorer award this summer. Fluminense will struggle to keep him under lock and key.
