Jennifer Player of Orange Habitat for Humanity joins Aaron to discuss Auman Village, a new Habitat community in Hillsborough that just broke ground this month. When it’s done, Auman Village will feature 75 new homes, most of them dedicated to first-time homebuyers making 30-80 percent of the area median income (AMI). In a first for Habitat, they’re also building market-rate homes to sell to residents making closer to 100 percent of AMI – partly to make the project financially feasible, but also because AMI-earning residents are also facing a shortage of local housing they can afford. (Habitat’s Weavers Grove development in Chapel Hill also has market-rate housing units, but they were built by a different developer; this will be the first time Habitat does the building themselves.)
