FAIRPORT, N.Y. – A Rochester native has graduated from one of the most prestigious military institutions in the country. News10NBC reporter Declan Stablow spoke with the graduate’s father to learn more about his journey.
Phil Caruso, a Gates Chili High School graduate, earned a material engineering degree from Cornell in 2008, Caruso served seven years in the Air Force. He then obtained both an MBA and a law degree from Yale.
Now Phil adds another accomplishment to his impressive resume. In the Fall of 2024, Caruso took on a new challenge by enrolling in the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., his graduation happened on June 12.
“He enrolled in the national defense college, which is really what I want everybody to know about the extent the government goes through to protect not just us, but all the international community,” Phil’s father, Sam Caruso said.
The National Defense University attracts top military professionals worldwide to receive a master’s in military intelligence.
“It’s quite amazing to sit among these people and realize what a bubble we live in. Because they all learn the strategies and the intelligence from these battle-tested generals,” Sam said.
Caruso’s program was part of the University’s College of International Security Affairs. He earned special recognition from his generals for his classwork.
“The job he has is always so dangerous. And it’s a dangerous world we live in, and he tackles it. And so the concern that kind of overrides. But of course we’re very proud of him,” Sam said.
After the graduation ceremony, Caruso deployed again. His location is undisclosed due to security reasons. His father expressed his hope for his son’s safe return.
Of the 69 people in Caruso’s graduating class, nearly two-thirds were international students.
