Ferrari once blamed Lewis Hamilton for extending their winless start to a season at the Canadian Grand Prix – now he may be their saviour.
Hamilton equalled Michael Schumacher‘s record for the most wins at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2019, but hasn’t won in Montreal since.
The Brit will forever have fond memories of the Canadian Grand Prix, with it being the site of his first-ever Formula 1 race victory.
In only the sixth race of his F1 career in 2007, the seven-time world champion stood on the top step of the podium at just 22-years-old.
Over 6,500 days later, the now 40-year-old is into his 10th Grand Prix weekend at Ferrari and still searching for that elusive first win.
Ironically, it was at the expense of the Scuderia that Hamilton won the most recent of his seven victories at the Canadian Grand Prix.
As is the case this season, the Prancing Horse had arrived in Montreal desperately seeking an end to their winless start to the 2019 season.
And four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel appeared on course to deliver for Ferrari after beating Hamilton to start on pole.
The retired driver held first position for the race to take the chequered flag, with then-Mercedes star Hamilton in second.
However, Vettel was demoted to runner-up following a five-second penalty for a near-collision with his former title rival on lap 48.
With Hamilton within DRS range and putting on the pressure, the 37-year-old lost the rear into Turn 3, pitching him onto the grass.
When Vettel re-joined, he drove onto the racing line in front of Hamilton, forcing him to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision.

It meant all Hamilton had to do was finish the race within five seconds of Vettel’s time to win, which he duly did.
Upon hearing that he’d been penalised, Vettel furiously said on the team radio: “I had nowhere to go. They are stealing the race from us.
“Seriously, you need to be a blind man to think you can go through the grass and control your car.
“We are lucky I did not hit the wall. Where was I allowed to go? This is the wrong world.”
Vettel’s anger refused to subside afterwards, as he swapped the first/second-place finish signs to have his Ferrari as the lead car.

“I was pushing to the end to try and get past. I forced him into an error; he went wide, I had the run on that corner, and we nearly collided. It’s unfortunate, but this is motor racing.”
The drama hadn’t finished, as Vettel opted against parking his car in parc ferme and therefore did not complete his usual TV interview until the podium.
During the winner’s ceremony, the mostly Ferrari Canadian fans then made their feelings clear by loudly jeering Hamilton throughout.
“All I can say is that I didn’t make the decision,” Hamilton said of his negative reception, “I don’t know what they are booing at.”

“I think he saw what was going on, I don’t think there was any intention to be in his harm’s way.
“I had trouble to stay on track. The people shouldn’t boo at Lewis, if anything they should boo at these funny decisions.”
Six years later, the travelling Tifosi ironically will be needed to support Hamilton more than ever following his continued struggles at Ferrari.
