Letters: The real TWK

To the Editor:

Ordinarily I don’t read columns by Tommy Wayne Kramer since the first few I read were so sophomoric as to not be worth my time, but his column titled “Ukiah-Renouncing Cherished Beliefs” in the June 1 Ukiah Daily Journal piqued my curiosity, so I dove in. Tommy Wayne did not disappoint. This column turned out to be a paean to the fascist regime that is now in the process of ending America’s 236 year experiment with constitutional democracy.

Tommy Wayne starts off by dutifully regurgitating the most extreme far right-wing talking points received directly from the lips of the dear leader: that DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) goes against American values; that BLM (Black Lives Matter) is a subversive terrorist organization; that homeless people are criminals; that gender affirming medical care is mutilating children, and most insidious of all; that global warming is a hoax. This is Tommy Wayne’s America.

Near the end of his screed, Tommy Wayne issues this veiled threat to anyone who dares to differ from the dear leader, “America need not celebrate differences. It’s time to appreciate our unity and our freedoms.” Who is the “our” in this sentence, Tommy Wayne?  Does “our” include people of color, poor people, transgender people or people whom you refer to as “environmental lunatics”? That’s the thing with fascists: if you’re not like them, then you’re not part of “our unity and our freedoms”.

Tommy Wayne concludes with this uplifting message, “It’s time for joy and togetherness here in the most diverse and accommodating country on earth.” It surprises me not that the irony of this statement is lost on Tommy Wayne as he calls for “joy and togetherness” after spending his entire column alienating half the people in this country.

Just for the record, I believe that diversity, equity and inclusion are quintessential American values, and that inclusion even includes the likes of you, Tommy Wayne.

Ordinarily I don’t waste my time responding to the sophomoric rantings of the Tommy Waynes of this world, but in these times when the intolerant forces of fascism are overrunning our country, the silence of decent people is complicity.
