If you were looking for a day of fishing, flying drones or enjoying a warm, sunny morning with Mother Nature, the Poudre River Trailathlon had all that and more.
The Poudre River Trail Corridor Board hosted the free event Saturday at the Poudre Learning Center, 8313 W. F St., Greeley. The annual event has been a staple to get families and children out into the 65 acres of open land the learning center offers for nearly a decade.
“Our goal, really, is to get kids outside,” said Barry Wilson, executive director of the board.

On the other side of the property, Aims Community College instructors helped attendees guide drones through the air.
Julie Cline, vice-chair of the board, greeted visitors and told them about these activities and more. About 130 people pre-registered for the event, she said.
Nathan Harvey, a Greeley resident, brought his two sons to the event. He said he saw posters for the event around the community and said it looked like another fun, family-friendly community event. He said his boys enjoyed fishing, learning archery and flying the drones.

(Jim Rydbom/Staff Photographer)Greeley Mayor Pro Tem Dale Hall, who chairs the Poudre River Trail Corridor Board, said the fun and educational experience had by the Harvey family is the kind of experience the board aims to deliver for all families.
“It’s our way of giving back to the community and getting them to understand what the trail is all about,” Hall said.
They’ve hosted the event in different months in previous years, Hall and Cline said, but they now feel June is the ideal month moving forward.
Linda Sears, the Poudre Learning Center’s administrative center, said the partnership between the board and the learning center is mutually beneficial. The learning center is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, she added.
