Gary O’Neil is in contention to replace Chris Wilder should he depart Sheffield United, talkSPORT understands.
talkSPORT reported during the week that Wilder faces an uncertain future at the Championship side after missing out on promotion.
Some board members are believed to be in favour of keeping the 57-year-old, although others would prefer a change of direction.
The Blades were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland in the Championship play-off final despite taking a first half lead at Wembley,
Should Wilder leave Sheffield United, then O’Neil could be set to fill the vacancy at Bramall Lane.
O’Neil hasn’t returned to management since December, when he was sacked by Wolves.
They were 19th in the Premier League and four points adrift of safety but would end the season in 16th.
Just days after leaving Wolves, O’Neil was sounded out by Championship side Millwall after club legend Neil Harris departed.
However, he turned down the opportunity to make an instant return to the dugout.
O’Neil made a big impression in the Premier League at the start of the 2022/23 season when he replaced Scott Parker at Bournemouth.
He was initially hired as the caretaker manager but then appointed as their permanent head coach in November 2022.
Despite securing their Premier League survival, the Cherries made the shock decision to part ways with the 42-year-old.
O’Neil has spent six months away from the game since leaving WolvesGettyO’Neil then joined Wolves in August 2023 and guided them to 14th in his first season.
He also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals and would later sign a new four-year deal at Molineux.
But after going winless in their first ten league matches of the 2024/25 campaign, O’Neil was starting to feel the pressure.
A 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town would spell the end of his tenure.
O’Neil is yet to have managed in the Championship so would face a new experience by joining Sheffield United.
The Blades will be one of the favourites for another promotion push after falling at the final hurdle against Sunderland.
